T500 -How to upgrade CCFL LCD to LED backlight display

Question

Can I replace the CCFL backlit LCD display in my T500  (model type 2082-3HU) Thinkpad with an LED backlit LCD?

Answer

This can be done, athough this is a major system modification that would invalidate some or all of the warranty, so it is not recommended.   The hardware maintenance manual is a great source of information with exploded views, part numbers and some disassembly / assembly instructins.

The LCD cable is a 30 pin connector and you don't need to change that. You just need to change your LCD and get a LED controller board.

The FRU for the LED controller board is 42W8080 and has been going on ebay for about $23  with $15 for expedited shipping, or $30 through IBM with $15 for overnight shipping.

The FRU for the LED LCD screen is 42T0587 or a LG Philips LP154WX7 (TL)(A2).
