If you have tried the power manager's setting, i think of the settings of BIOS. Check it.

Hence the problem you have, Thinkpads throttle down without the battery installed. If you put your battery in, and do the same test then the problem of CPU throttling should go away.

Also, which adapter are you using? 65 or 90 watt?

in the previous thinkpad laptops the throttling problem goes away with a 90 watt adapter installed, but i am not sure whether this is case for the latest thinkpads.

Just leave the battery in, and you would be okay. Make sure you set the charging threshold appropriately under Thinkpad Power Manager. i.e. start charging when the battery level drops below 50% and stop charging 95%.

P.S. If the battery is faulty, it would fail regardless of whether you use it only a few times and leave it uninstalled, and the problem could be exacerbated by the fact that it fails just after 1 year battery warranty.

Your battery can also act as the UPS, should power fail due to either blackout or brownout.

if you just leave the battery installed in your laptop it won't damage the battery, provided it is not constantly draining and recharging.

The battery will get damaged after around 300 to 500 charge cycles. So just set the battery to charge below 50% and stop charging at 95%.

Yeah, that's the beautiful thing about Lenvo--you can set custom charging thresholds in Power Manager so that you can minimize the battery "damage" when you are almost always plugged into a power outlet.  However, if you really DO want to work without the battery, the 90w power adapter will give you the good performance, like a battery with the 65w adapter.
