T520 - Recover To Factory

Hi, I have Thinkpad T520 that I want to recover to factory setup.  Before I do this, I need to change the hard drive.

The drive currently in the system doesn't have a recovery partition so I am wondering how I can do this.  I contacted Lenovo and said to get a recovery disc from them for $50.  I am wondering if there is any other way and I can get it back to factory settings besides this.

Re: T520 - Recover To Factory

Hi

If Lenovo recovery partition on the old drive is absent, there is not another way to perform the factory recovery besides of the recovery media purchasng.

Re: T520 - Recover To Factory

Thanks.  So I just install the new drive, run the recovery disc, and it will make a recovery partition on the drive and setup Windows?

Re: T520 - Recover To Factory

Yes, as result you'll get the system as from the factory.

If you want, clone (not copy) existing drive content to the new one.

Re: T520 - Recover To Factory

Thanks again.  I found somebody selling recovery discs that list T430, T530, and W530 as the models.  Would this work as well?

Re: T520 - Recover To Factory

I think - no. Because of:
- different OS (product number), so OEM activation might not be done
- laptop platforms (x20, x30) differ, so drivers differ, so you'll get a set of issues

Re: T520 - Recover To Factory

Thanks a lot for your help.

I actually made a mistake; I said there was no other partition, but I found a partition named "System Reserved."  It is 100MB with 72MB.  I'm not sure what it is, but It doesn't seem like this is a recovery partition so I don't know if it will make a difference.

Re: T520 - Recover To Factory

That partition doesn't store recovery image.
The size of Lenovo_Recovery partition with factory image archives should be about 16 GB, if I remember correctly. Check it out in the Disk Manager.

Re: T520 - Recover To Factory

Sorry to bump this, but I am still looking.  What is the difference between cloning and copying?  I thought cloning would just take my current drive and copy everything over to the new drive.  I want to clear everything as if the system just came from the factory.

I was also wondering, if I found somebody that has a T520 with the recovery partition, can I make a recovery disc from that and then use it on my system?  Or is the recovery disc system-speciifc?
