T540p mSATA installation

2013-12-19, 7:28 AM

Hi! Anyone successfully installed an mSATA SSD in T540p (20BE) ? The user guide  (http://download.lenovo.com/ibmdl/pub/pc/pccbbs/mobiles_pdf/t540p_w540_ug_en.pdf) is not so detailed regarding this, possible? Thanks!

Hi,

Welcome to Lenovo Community Forums!

Please refer the hardware maintenance manual which gives a detailed explanation on the removal and installation of hardware components.

Hope this helps!

Best regards,

Mithun.

I have been running a crucial 980GB SSD for over a month on a T540p 20BE without any problems.  It is a speedy drive and went in with no problems.

The Crucial 980 GB SSD is *not* an mSATA drive. It is a normal SSD which sits in the 9.5mm hard drive slot.

The T540p only supports an M.2 slot and no longer an mSATA slot. Unfortunately, Lenovo left room for a tiny M.2 card which as of now limits you to 16 or 32 GB.

Next, from what I have read, Lenovo does not officially support using the M.2 slot as an active/boot drive.  For some reason, they only want it to be a cache drive which is next to useless...  See Page 65 of the Hardware Maintenance Manual of the T540p/W540.

I have a T530 which I am not swapping for a T540p do to its very bad design of the M.2 slot... You can get a 480 GB mSATA card for the T530.

Yes, I made a mistake in overlooking that the discussion was about msata.  You are correct that the M.2 SSD card can only be used for cache.  The T540p/W540 Users Guide on page 102 states that the m.2 SSD can only be used for cache.  In replacing the 500GB 2.5inch hard drive with the Crucial 980GB SSD I found out how cheapened the Thinkpad has become.  The Thinkpad that I replaced was a T500 and it had the slot on the side of the machine where it was very easy to replace the hard drive.  The T540p has a very funky and difficult to use space underneath the large cover on the bottom of the machine and the drive is no longer protected in a steel case but by a thin sheet of metal that is fragile and difficult to change to the new drive.  If I had not already purchased a T540p, I would be looking elsewhere for a new computer.  Also as stated elsewhere in the forum, the new touchpad "buttons" are almost useless.  I miss the excellent IBM engineering of the old Thinkpad.  Lenovo is gradually making the Thinkpad a piece of junk.
