T550 coil whine noise

[ Edited ]

Hi

Just received my new lenovo Thinkpad T550 with a Samsung 512 GB SSD and in a silent environment it makes a strange noise (fans are off - so this is not the problem):

This becomes quite annoying when you work e.g. at night.

After doing some research in this forum I found that this is the "coil whine bug".

I just tried this registry change mentioned in a different post and it seems to work (however power consumption will go up) after rebooting the machine:

reg add HKLM\System\CurrentControlSet\Control\Processor /v Capabilities /t REG_DWORD /d 0x0007e066

Undo:

reg delete HKLM\System\CurrentControlSet\Control\Processor /v Capabilities /f

However this cannot be the solution. I thought only older models are affected and now I am quite disappointed that even the latest model has these issues.

Best

Kilian

Re: T550 coil whine noise

I have got a similar problem with the 90W AC adapter...it whines a lot.

Now that I have installed two HDDs in my T520 I can't hear it that much but still at night it surely is annoying. It's moreso the frequency of the noise, rather than the volume.

I had this noise too. Very disturbing when in otherwise quiet environments. The solution was to disable the CPU Deeper Sleep system setting using the ThinkVantage Technologies Power Manager 6 for Windows 7. Download here: http://support.lenovo.com/dk/en/downloads/ds014924
