T550 with Intel 5500 graphics, 4K external monitor

2015-03-26, 16:43 PM

Hello, am the proud new owner of a T550 type 20CK and ProDock. The ThinkPad itself has the 3K (2880 by 1620) LCD panel. I want to use this machine at my desk with an external 4K (3840x2160) monitor so that windows can move from screen to screen without scaling. But the Screen Resolution section of Windows 8.1 control panel only shows a max resolution for the external screen of 2560x1440.

The hardware is supposed to be able to do this. I think I need a better driver. Explanation:

Graphics are from the Intel HD Graphics 5500 onboard chip. The spec sheet for my machine, here, http://psref.lenovo.com/Product/164?MT=20CK  says  "Intel HD Graphics 5500 in processor only, or Intel HD Graphics 5500 in processor and NVIDIA GeForce® 940M, 1GB memory (discrete models are only available in Western Europe); supports external analog monitor via VGA and digital monitor via Mini DisplayPort; supports three independent displays; Max resolution: 3840x2160@60Hz (DP via mDP cable); 2560x1600@60Hz (VGA)"

Yet this resolution is not selectable.

The Intel HD graphics 5500 driver updated by Lenovo System Update is dated 11/18/2014, pretty old. Intel's site has a driver dated 3/6/2015. But the system will not let me install this driver saying my system needs a custom driver I must obtain from Lenovo. Please help!

Re: T550 with Intel 5500 graphics, 4K external monitor

I just solved my own problem. In the monitor's settings menu, there was a setting for MST (multi-stream transport). It was set to "off."  I changed this setting to "primary" and lost all screen content. I then unplugged the monitor and plugged it back in. The screen came on as a duplicate display of my laptop display, but in the display settings, suddenly the 3,840 x 2160 was available. I selected to extend the desktop and applied and then selected the 4K resolution setting, and it all works as expected.

This is weird, as the advice seems contrary to this statement on Dell's own support website:

  1. If your system supports DP version 1.2, the monitor can display the resolution of 3840x2160 @ 60hz. The display Multi-Stream Transport (MST) should be set to "Off" which is default condition.
    • MST Off: (DP1.2 mode for single monitor setup) Default mode: 4k*2k 60Hz with MST function Disabled.
    • MST Primary: (DP1.2 mode for daisy chain setup) MST function enabled for primary monitor in Daisy Chain setup. Expected resolution is 4k*2k 30Hz with MST (DP out) enabled.
    • MST Secondary: (DP1.1 for daisy chain and single display setup) MST function disabled for secondary monitor in Daisy Chain setup Expected resolution is 4k*2k 30Hz with MST (DP out) disabled.

Menu settings of monitor confirmed to remain on "primary" after power-cycling mentioned above.

How are you connecting the monitor? DisplayPort? Have you tried plugging it into the laptop directly?

I have the same question - I just received my T550 today, got the Pro dock, and I am waiting on a 3440x1440 monitor. Hoping that everything works...

HomelessITguy,

Welcome to the forum.  I shared your post with one of our engineers who I know has worked a fair amount with T, W and docking / external displays.  While you mention some concerns with scaling (which may wind up being inherent to Windows) - will scale because the EDID information the monitor supplies tells the driver / Windows what size display it is, in addition to its native resolution, I think your primary concern is not being able to get the desired resolution on the display.

Which make & model displays are you using?   It sounds as though you are using displayport connections - they are required to support that resolution.  Our latest Intel video driver is  10.18.14.4029 released 1/27/2015 - can you check that one on our support site and give it a try?

You might also check the firmware level on the dock - we have had some updates, so it would be good to rule that out.

Our engineer  tested a T550 with two ThinkVision Pro2840m 4K displays, each with a different firmware level.  These are the only Lenovo 4K monitors we have available in lab. He was able to run both at  3840 x 2160 in extended mode.

We can try to dig deeper into this with a bit more info.   Could you also confirm system bios level and OS version?

Thanks

Mark

I am not sure if this can help, but I possess a T550 as well. My model has a FHD screen.

I am currently using an external UHD monitor via the mini Display port and everything is working fine.

My Intel HD 5500 driver version is 10.18.14.4029.

Re: T550 with Intel 5500 graphics, 4K external monitor

Hi -- I'm using the Dell P2415Q monitor. I have installed the latest driver that is available on Dell's website, which is from 1.1.1.0 updated 9/9/14.

At the moment, it's connected through the dock through a full-size DisplayPort cable. I have also tried directly from the laptop with a mini DP cable to the monitor's full-size DP input with no change in results.

You are correct that my main issue is that I want to drive the external display at its native resolution of 3840x2160. If I can do this, I will have no problems with scaling, as both screens will operate at a similar DPI.

OS is Windows 8.1 Enterprise 64 bit. I had to do a clean install of it to take advantage of non-profit license rates for this OS. I have the Lenovo System Update utility installed, and have installed everything it offers me. I have the Intel HD Graphics Driver 8/8/1 [64] driver, version 10.18.14.4029, (the version you mentioned) updated 3/20/2015.

Here is a screenshot of my BIOS info for the T550. I don't know how to check nor upgrade the ProDock BIOS version; can you please point me toward a link?

Re: T550 with Intel 5500 graphics, 4K external monitor

Hello all,

I noticed these posts on this forum. There's a similar discussion going on here:

https://forums.lenovo.com/t5/W-Series-ThinkPad-Laptops/W550s-UltraDock-DisplayPort-Issues/td-p/20600...

It seems to all be tied together. I'm using a Samsung UHD 4k monitor, and am not able to get the 60Hz refresh rate, even though the monitor is rated for it. Actually, when using DisplayPort, i get less than 3k resolution max, but with HDMI, I get 4k resolution, but only at 30Hz.

Thanks!

Jeb

I know it's not 4K, but I am running 3440x1440@60Hz (which is still way into DP 1.2 territory) with an LG 34UC97 more or less fine with a Lenovo Pro dock and a T550...
