T580 crashes with a read only NVMe SSD (PM981)

2018-10-02, 10:17 AM

After running ubuntu happily from the moment I got my T580 (In April this year) my laptop suddenly started to crash with a read-only SSD.

Lenovo support 'fixed it' by replacing Linux with a fresh Windows installation (which took the support guys two weeks ...).

I reinstalled Ubuntu 18.04 on it and I found articles describing issues with Samsung SSD's and APST. Several fixes included adding kernal params like nvme_core.default_ps_max_latency_us=5000, nvme_core.default_ps_max_latency_us=200 or nvme_core.default_ps_max_latency_us=0

None of the fixes/work around seems to work for me ...

I noticed there is a firmware upgrade available for the PM981, but there's only a windows download for it.

Does anyone know how to get rid of the NVMe drive going into read only mode?

Does anyone know how to upgrade the PM981 firmware from linux?
