T580 with Transcend m.2 2242 ssd compatible issue

HI, Everyone

I just bought my first T580 and got a Transcend MTS-400 128GB M.2 2242 ssd to do a custom upgrade my self. After carefuly watch the Lenovo tutorial video on Youtube, I installed the ssd on the 2nd PCIe slot. After boot into the  Bios, the Bios couldn't detect the new ssd. Updated the Bios to the newest version and still no luck. So I spend some time searching online and found the following post:

https://forums.lenovo.com/t5/ThinkPad-T400-T500-and-newer-T/T470-unable-to-detect-M-2-SSD-2242-after...

It looks like some compatibility issue with certain brand of m.2 2242 SSD. I wonder if that's the case for my new T580? Does Lenovo ever comes out with a list of m.2 ssd that their Thinkpad is compatible with?

Re: T580 with Transcend m.2 2242 ssd compatible issue

Welcome to the Community

According to the T580 specification, the 2nd m.2 slot (combo wwan/ssd slot) supports PCIe NVME SSD only, while Transcend MTS400 is SATA III drive. So, the device isn't compatible.

Re: T580 with Transcend m.2 2242 ssd compatible issue

m.2 2242 PCIe drives are still rare.
Unfortunately, FRU BOM file for T580 is absent on the support site yet.

So, below is an information from on-line service partslookup for T580:
FRU 00UP650 - PCIe NVME Toshiba M.2 BG3 Series, 128GB
FRU 00UP686 - PCIe NVME SK Hynix 128 GB

Also, this combo slot supports OPTANE memory:
FRU 00UP481 - Lenovo branded SSD M.2 2242 PCIe NVMe Intel Optane memory 16GB

Re: T580 with Transcend m.2 2242 ssd compatible issue

Thanks!! I will try to look for the right parts or wait for the new SSD. I heard Liteon T11 2242 is also PCIe NVMe, but currently only available in China.

Re: T580 with Transcend m.2 2242 ssd compatible issue

Hi, I also having the same problem.

i want to add in another SSD and move my OS over to this SSD. My T580 base unit is only comes with 1TB Sata. May I know whether I can put in 256 GB SSD? May I know whether Transcend M.2 SSD 256GB SATA III 6Gb/s MTS400S MLC 2242 , P/NO: TS256GMTS400S [J7] can put in and run smoothly? Thanks in advanced.

Re: T580 with Transcend m.2 2242 ssd compatible issue

As it says higher up in the thread.  The T580 needs an NVMe drive and the Transend is SATA.  It won't work.
