I'd say no. It will just take longer to charge. I won't use more power to charge or in otherwords the rate will not change any different than before. Just will take longer over all to achieve 100% charge level.

Here's what Lenovo recommends for the T530. Assuming the same applies to the T520 then quadcore with discrete graphics a 90W adapter may not be able to operate the system and recharge the battery at the same time:

I was not aware that the laptop i5 came in a 4 core version. What is the machine type (do not post serial)? What processor is in there?

Re: TP520 90W charger - okay for 9cell battery?

Hello siki-online,

The T520 works best with the 135w charger, which is made for both the quad core and dual core models.  This allows the computer to do what it needs (work regularly and charge).

The 90w charger is made for the dual core only. But it will allow the computer to work to a certain extent (not to its full capacity) and will not charge the battery unless the computer is off.  This is with the 6-cell battery.

If I were you I would go ahead and buy the 135w power charger for the 9-cell battery.  This will make sure you stay charged while working without giving up any processing power or graphics power.

Hope this helps,

Alex

Re: TP520 90W charger - okay for 9cell battery?

so, after a few days with a new notebook i can say this experience. notebook is a great machine, but it's power is underdimensined for shure. even using integrated graphics (they're just fine for what i do) battery consumes fast and recharge is very slow. so the conclusion is to buy an extra battery but not the 9cell standard type, but to buy an extra Battery 27++ (9 cell slice) (57Y4545) to add under the notebook and stronger charger. can i ask for an technical estimation - 135W charger is enough for this notebook with 6+9cell battery at the same time or i need 1 class stronger?

Re: TP520 90W charger - okay for 9cell battery?

Well, since you have a dual-core i5-2450M, I believe that you should be fine with the 90W charger. What are you doing to make the battery drain so fast?

Re: TP520 90W charger - okay for 9cell battery?

nothing much actually - office stuff, wifi, pdf stuff, email, even SSD is instead HDD (on previous notebook that was the reason for 30% more battery lasting). might be that the battery is little faulty?

Re: TP520 90W charger - okay for 9cell battery?

The battery capacity is specified in Power Manager in the battery tab. The Watt/hr native and actually watt/hr condition. Have a look at that. You can fully discharge a few times to where the LED goes orange and then fully charge a few times with full cycles and see if that help. The maintenance button may do some or all of that but I've never used it myself.

I don't believe a firmware update was released for the battery but you could run the firware check while you're at it in the same screen.

Re: TP520 90W charger - okay for 9cell battery?

The 90w power adapter is good for a 9-cell but I would opt for the 135w if you are going to get a slice battery as well.  This would ensure that there is enough power getting to the system.

With a 90w there might be some problems about getting the computer to charge in a timely fashion if you have both the standard 6-cell and the 9-cell slice batteries installed.

Personally I would go with the 135w.  The 90w should work but the 135w will work for sure.

Hope this helps,

Alex
