ThinkPad A485 - Keyboard Typing Issue

2018-09-12, 12:32 PM

Hi,

The ThinkPad A485 currently suffers from the same issue as the E485, where if typing on the keyboard quickly, jumbles up the letters. This appears to be a firmware bug as I have tested in in Windows and Linux, and yet it persists.

https://forums.lenovo.com/t5/ThinkPad-11e-Windows-13-E-and/E485-strangely-unresponsive-keyboard/td-p/4170418

Could I please also have confirmation that the A485 will be supported for BIOS updates via LVFS (fwupd.org)?

If you need any more information please ping me.

Cheers

I can confirm the issue on my A485 and lots of people on reddit seem to agree, e.g. https://www.reddit.com/r/thinkpad/comments/9e9ur6/a485_early_adopters_using_linux_please_share_your/

As a similar issue was fixed on E485 is there a fix via BIOS update possible or planned for A485s? Otherwise I'll have to return my device.

Hello,

Thanks for being patient. A BIOS is planned to be released mid October which will include a similar EC update as received for the E485 to address keyboard issues.

Thanks for the reply.

Is there any information you can share in regards to Linux support for this model?

Currently there are issues with ACPI tables during boot on Linux.

Kind regards

I can also confirm this problem.

Please, while you fix this, also fix the bug that the key combination Windows+LeftShift+ArrowRight does not send anything at all to the OS. Windows+LeftShift+ArrowLeft does work as intended.

Hi Andy,

I'm using latest bios available 1.2 for the Thinkpad A485

There is bug in the bios firmware.Particularly the IVRS table in the BIOS, looks like there are bad entries. (see attachment)

Is Lenovo aware of this issue?

When will they release a fix?

Thanks

Just want to toss my hat in the ring on this as I, too, experience this issue. Really looking forward to the BIOS update I just hope that Lenovo would communicate timelines better and then honor them as well. A-series was announced to be released in July though wasn't available in US until late September. Fair enough that it was apparently a staged deployment with Asia then Europe and, finally, north America receiving the laptop but it would have been nice to have communicated this.

Anyway, am really desperate to get this typing issue addressed. I'm going a bit mad having all of my commands getting garbled up!

I run Gentoo and build my own kernel (currently running 4.18.3) so perhaps with the newer kernel this isn't an issue but I can say without any hesitation that I _do not_ need to add any boot parameters such as the famed "ivrs_ioapic[32]=00:14.0" boot parameter/value that is going around.

Furthermore, I've been able to get _all_ of the hardware to work including the WLAN and BT devices though these two took a bit of fussing (see this post for how: https://www.reddit.com/r/thinkpad/comments/9neive/i_fixed_bluetooth_on_the_a485_on_linux/)

So, apart from the keyboard typing issue it's turning out to be a wonderful laptop.

With BIOS v1.05 the keyboard seems to have been greatly improved regarding the jumbled issue.
