ThinkPad T430 (Intel HD 4000) screen flickering + freezes/crashes

Hi, I use Lenovo ThinkPad T430 (N1T4ZPB84lC - Core i5 3210M / 14,1 HD+ / 8192 / 628 (128 SSD + 500 HDD) / Intel HD 4000 / DVD / Windows 7 Pro) with external screen and sometimes strange problem occurs... Computer freezes, screen starts to flicker and after 20-30 seconds computer reboots... There is no regularities in this case. It happens at random moments.

Here you can see what it looks like: https://youtu.be/S1hmH3YNL-o

Any ideas what can be wrong and how to fix this?

Re: ThinkPad T430 (Intel HD 4000) screen flickering + freezes/crashes

Hi Krzysiekd,

Welcome to Lenovo Community!

As per the clip which you have provided, the issue looks like with Intel graphics driver. Can you provide us the current driver version which was installed on your system?

Best regards,

Hemanth Kumar

Driver version: 9.18.10.3359. It's not so old (8/12/2014) and there is no newer one from Lenovo, I guess...

Same problem occured with previous versions.

Re: ThinkPad T430 (Intel HD 4000) screen flickering + freezes/crashes

Hi Krzysiekd,

Thank you for the reply!

  • Will issue occur when AC adapter is connected or while working with battery mode?
  • Did you check updating the system BIOS?
  • Does the issue occur in BIOS & “Safe mode”?

Best regards,

Hemanth Kumar

Re: ThinkPad T430 (Intel HD 4000) screen flickering + freezes/crashes

Hi Hemanth,

- I work with AC adapter connected most of the time, so yes, it occurs while adapter is connected.

- BIOS is updated - no updates are shown in Lenovo's update software.

- It occurs randomly, so it's hard to force it to occur. I don't work in safe mode, so... It haven't occured in safe mode Smiley Wink

Re: ThinkPad T430 (Intel HD 4000) screen flickering + freezes/crashes

Hi Krzysiekd,

Is it possible to check and confirm if the issue occurs in “Safe Mode” as also?

Because we have to verify if the issue is related to Windows or with drivers or any hardware.

Best regards,

Hemanth Kumar

Re: ThinkPad T430 (Intel HD 4000) screen flickering + freezes/crashes

OK, it took me a while but... I'm pretty sure it's a matter of overheating.

I've used SpeedFan to monitor temperatures and sometimes it shows 80C and more... I don't know what was the temperature of CPU in the moment of flickering or shutting down, but my guess is that this is the problem in this case.

Am I right or are these normal values?

Re: ThinkPad T430 (Intel HD 4000) screen flickering + freezes/crashes

Hi Hemanth,

No. In my first post in this thread I've posted youtube link to video showing my problem. That flickering occured almost every time during watching some video and laptop was hot (I don't know how hot, because I didn't check).

But then this flickering stopped occuring and laptop started to shut down sometimes.

Last week I've installed SpeedFan and saw that sometimes CPU temperatures are as hot as 80-85C. So there is a chance that they can rise few degrees more and that's the reason of shutting down...

Replacement of thermal fan is pretty easy in ThinkPads, I guess (here is instruction for my model: http://support.lenovo.com/us/en/documents/pd023538), so maybe I'll replace it and check if this problems still occur?

What is the serial number of this replacement part?

And we're back...

Move delayed but still coming
