ThinkPad T510 without eSATA ???

2011-02-12, 8:32 AM

Yesterday I realized that my ThinkPad T510 (4314-7NU) does NOT have any eSATA ports in contrast to what is stated on each and every product specification one could only found on the internet.
All the pictures of the left side of the laptop I have seen contains eSATAp (USB/eSATA combo) on it, excepts mine.

Basically, instead of this:

on my laptop I have this:

http://lh4.ggpht.com/_6dQZiozfUeU/TVY_F_VGRdI/AAAAAAAABDA/8fekJUp51KY/t510.usb.JPG

What is it? Is it a normal USB?? Why does it look differently from the other USB ports?

What other options do I have to connect my eSATA cable excepts using eSATA/USB adapter. I want to be able to benefit from the high speed SATA interface, so USB is not an option for me.

Thank you!

And another question - does anybody have any idea what is that wide slim thing placed right above the mentioned USB slot, FireWire and WiFi swtch? Does it suppose to be a some kind of slot for something? Or is it just an unused stub?

the slim thing is a smartcard reader if you selected the option when you ordered the laptop from Lenovo.

Hi wajda!

Some T510 models have the USB 2.0/eSATA combo port. Evidently yours doesn't :smileysad:.

The ThinkPad tabook shows models both with and without.

USB-C: Just cos it fits don't mean it works.

WOW!

I just noticed this on mine, too. Thought I ordered an esata--guess not--but, what's this other thing. Doesn't seem to be a standard USB.

Anybody really know?

It is a standard USB 2.0 connector. It looks different from the other USB 2.0 ports because it has to fill the same larger hole in the side as the USB 2.0/eSATA combo port.

USB-C: Just cos it fits don't mean it works.

That looks like an eSATA port on his though, the plastic around the border just doesn't have the cuts to accept an eSATA cable.

Yes it looks like they made that simple modification to turn the combo USB 2.0/eSATA connector into a USB 2.0-only connector.

Hm... Wait..... So you are saying that it's probably worth for me to try to just make those cuts in the plastic around the port and I'll get eSATAp? :smileysurprised:

WOW, that would be really great! :smileyvery-happy:

Just need to think about what to do with my 3-year warranty. I wonder if I could reshape the plug on my cable instead of the receptacle.
