ThinkPad T540p Screen backlight Issue

My Thinkpad T540p i5-4430 1920 x 1080 Screen has an issue with it's backlight.

Only the rightmost side of the screen is visible when AC power is connected (which makes it barely useable), and when in battery mode the screen is completely black.

  • Is this something that can be fixed on the cheap?
  • Is it an inverter problem?
  • Is it a fuse problem?
  • Is it a cable problem?

Any idea what could be causing the issue and how to fix it?

Any help or pointers on how to fix this would be really welcomed.

It's out of warranty, so I'm okay with opening it up if need be.

Regards

Alan

Re: ThinkPad T540p Screen backlight Issue

It is hard to be sure without seeing it, but if the screen is lighted on one side under AC, it has to be the panel or the motherboard. Do you have a warranty?

Re: ThinkPad T540p Screen backlight Issue

no warranty unfortunately.

When AC Power is connected, even when it's switched off the backlight(rightside) is on.

I'm going to open it up and wiggle a few wires and see if something changes.

From searching the internet it doesn't look like the T540 Screen uses an inverter, but uses a bulb instead (it think). So maybe a replacement could work if it comes to it.
