Have a thinkpad 550. Win 7. System would randomly be unresponsive, wherein I could move and click with the mouse but nothing would happen. I could also Alt-tab between windows. However, no applications would open or be allowed to be closed. This situation would happen randomly. It's become much more consistent now, requiring a restart every 15 minutes or so.
I completely formatted the hard drive and reinstalled windows 7 but the problem still occurs. Problem occurs with both track pad and usb mouse. Ran a BIOS check of motherboard and ram and no errors came up.
I suspect the problem may be hardware related because during the reinstall of win 7 off a USB drive the unresponsive system but moveable mouse cursor occurred, requiring a restart.

Hi there, LibertyRansom -
Thank you for writing in to the Lenovo Forum - happy to have you here today.
Anything in the Event Viewer?
I would download something like HWinfo32 and check the CPU temperature. Heavy load and freezing usually means your CPU is overheating.
Update us how it goes.

Update - It is a Thinkpad 530, not a Thinkpad 550.
In any event, I ran the mointor program and event viewer. Nothing in the HWmonitor program appeared to be out of place, although I'm not familiar with interpreting the temperature data.
Similiary, nothing popped out for me in the Event Viewer. However, I've never used that program before.
I would note, that I had to hard restart my computer about 5 times and it would freeze on startup (where the Windows 7 logo displayed). On the fifth attempt I was able to get it to start, downloaded HWMonitor program and checked Event Viewer. The mouse cursor would automatically slowly drift to the upper right corner of the screen. The mouse pad would not click, although the cursor would move. However, with a USB mouse I was able to accomplish the tasks.
I have saved the HWmonitor data and Event Viewer information and uploaded here, if it is helpful. Perhaps someone will see something, as I do not know how to interpret the information.

Took apart the computer and removed a fairly significant amount of dust. Also, ran an error check on the hard-drive, which came back error free. Freezing on start-up has stopped, however, I am still having problems with the system to the extent that programs will be unresponsive to clicking or closing, and the mouse cursor constantly floats to the right hand corner.
While I ran a check on the RAM in the bios, which came back clean, is it possible that the RAM could be a problem? Only have a single 4 GB stick. Perhaps replacing it might help?
My final thought is it might be the motherboard, in which case, I am assume I am hosed. Thanks for anyone's input.
