Thinkpad A485 - Bluetooth not turning on (Linux)

2018-09-26, 19:00 PM

Linux may be unsupported, so I just want to hear from other users:

Are you able to use the Bluetooth on the Realtek R8822be in this Laptop under Linux? If so, under what kernel?

It is working for Antergos 4.18.* Kernel. Did you turn it on with FN+F10?

I am probably running the same kernel as you do:

$ uname -a
Linux xenonpad 4.18.9-arch1-1-ARCH #1 SMP PREEMPT Wed Sep 19 21:19:17 UTC 2018 x86_64 GNU/Linux

The key combo Fn+F10 sends the XF86Bluetooth command, according to xev:

KeyPress event, serial 33, synthetic NO, window 0x1600001,
    root 0x6fd, subw 0x0, time 209297, (-1066,360), root:(218,386),
    state 0x0, keycode 245 (keysym 0x1008ff94, XF86Bluetooth), same_screen YES,
    XLookupString gives 0 bytes:
    XmbLookupString gives 0 bytes:
    XFilterEvent returns: False

Would you be so kind as to activate FnLock on the ESC key, run xev and post the output of it when hitting F10 here for comparison? If it matches, the next step would be for me to find out, what happens on your Antergos if XF86Bluetooth is issued.

As a sidenote: It's also not working for me in a live booted Antergos system meaning that Fn+F10 does not turn the module on or make it visible to the OS in any way.

It looks like a update from this or last Week has Broken the Support.

Don't know which one it was... because last Week or so it was definitely working also the Brightness (FN+F5/F6) was working but now don't do anymore.

Thanks for the update. Seems a bug report is needed here, just not sure where.

The backlight can be set via ACPI:

$ cat .config/i3/scripts/acpi_brightness.sh
#!/bin/bash

BRIGHTNESS=`cat /sys/class/backlight/amdgpu_bl0/actual_brightness`
MAX_BRIGHT=`cat /sys/class/backlight/amdgpu_bl0/max_brightness`

case "$1" in
  up)
    BRIGHTNESS=$((BRIGHTNESS + 32))
    if [ $BRIGHTNESS -gt $MAX_BRIGHT ] ; then BRIGHTNESS=$MAX_BRIGHT ; fi
    echo $BRIGHTNESS > /sys/class/backlight/amdgpu_bl0/brightness
  ;;

  down)
    BRIGHTNESS=$((BRIGHTNESS - 32))
    if [ $BRIGHTNESS -lt 0 ] ; then BRIGHTNESS=0 ; fi
    echo $BRIGHTNESS > /sys/class/backlight/amdgpu_bl0/brightness
  ;;
esac

Then just bind the script execution to the appropriate XF86 commands like in i3wm via

bindsym XF86MonBrightnessDown exec ~/.config/i3/scripts/acpi_brightness.sh down
bindsym XF86MonBrightnessUp exec ~/.config/i3/scripts/acpi_brightness.sh up

I have a solution to getting bluetooth to work on the A485. I have posted an updated version of the firmware along with a full explaination here: https://github.com/samcv/A485-RTL8822BE-firmware

Essentially I was able to extract the Lenovo provided firmware for the wifi card after some effort and poking around the Linux kernel source and the wifi driver's binary blob with a hex editor. Hope this solution helps everyone!

Going to update the status. Bluetooth under Linux has been fixed as of BIOS 1.06

Bios changelog states:
- [Important] Fixed an issue that the BT status can't be got in Linux.
