Thinkpad T400 Wifi chip

2014-08-25, 11:25 AM

Hi, I just bought a Thinkpad T400 off eBay quite some time ago for my father, and the WiFi card just died recently. What WiFi chip do I need to buy to replace it with?
I just need to know which WiFi chip to get.
Thanks.

Problem is several Thinkpads have a white list and will allow specific cards only.

The one listed above will physically fit and it should work, but I'm not certain if it's part of the T400 whitelist :smileysad:

Thanks, I'll look into those later today.
One last question though.
Would this one work at all?

Hi,

As  points out, a generic wifi card won't pass the BIOS whitelist - even if it is a supported model - unless it has a Lenovo FRU number.  Cards with an FRU have a slightly-modified firmware that identifies them to the whitelist.

The Hardware Maintenance Manual doesn't list that '1000 FRU as supported, but the BIOS readme does indicate that the '1000 has been added to the whitelist.  It doesn't mention the FRU, unfortunately.

BIOS: 3.06 / ECP: 1.03
Added support for Intel WiFi Link 1000

For $9.99 I'd be inclined to take the risk, since that eBay vendor and other on-line vendors list the FRU as T400-compatible.  You may need to update the BIOS if it's earlier than 3.06.

Z.
