Thinkpad T430 - replace WLAN card and add WWAN card

Hi! I have a T430 2347CTO. The notebook has an Intel Wireless LAN (11abgn, 11bgn, 11ac) adapter installed.

1. The WLAN adapter is causing problems and I'd like to replace it, but I'm not sure what I should install instead. Any tips?

2. I'd like to install a WWAN adapter, but I'm not sure if my model has the required antenna installed. Does anybody know if it has?

Re: Thinkpad T430 - replace WLAN card and add WWAN card

I confirmed that this WLAN card will work: https://www.ebay.com/itm/Hot-Intel-Dual-Band-Wireless-AC-wifi-Card-for-Lenovo-Thinkpad-X230-T430-60Y...

And I also confirmed this WWAN card will work: https://www.ebay.com/itm/Gobi3000-3G-WWAN-Card-60Y3257-for-Thinkpad-X220-X230-T420-T430-W520-W530/22...

The WLAN card is N wireless; and the WWAN card is 3G.  The ones I linked to are shipping from the US and the best price I could find.

Hope that helps!

Re: Thinkpad T430 - replace WLAN card and add WWAN card

Actually, Intel 6205 wifi card doesn't support 802.11ac specification. It's a/b/g/n capable card
https://ark.intel.com/compare/59471

In addition to the list above:
Ericsson H5321gw - 3g wwan card
Sierra mc7700, mc7710, mc7750 - common name "Gobi 4000", the 3g/LTE modems not for AT&T only, but almost worldwide

Re: Thinkpad T430 - replace WLAN card and add WWAN card

Good point.  eBay listing is wrong.  Part number matches though.

Re: Thinkpad T430 - replace WLAN card and add WWAN card

That's not ebay's suggestion about the card and explanation in the post, but yourth one. ) 802.11a and 802.11ac specifications differ too significantly.

ebay sellers don't read the parts specifications, they like nice technical words and put, in most cases, wrong words on the discritiion page

Re: Thinkpad T430 - replace WLAN card and add WWAN card

Thanks for all your replies!

My Thinkpad has two cables (a blue and a orange one) taped to the mainboard where the RAM/PCIe slots are - I suggest those are the antenna cables, so I guess I'm lucky and I just have to install a WWAN card. Should I go for Gobi 4000? I'm a little confused with the model types and I'd like to go for the "best" option, meaning the one that has the most used and/or the highest speed (if there are any differences).

The same goes for WLAN cards. According to ThinkWiki, those are my options due to BIOS whitelisting:

ThinkPad BGN (RealTek - Stockton) 1x1 BGN
Intel Centrino Wireless-N 1000 (Condor Peak) 1x2 BGN
Intel Centrino Advanced-N 6250 (Taylor Peak) 2x2 AGN
Intel Centrino Ultimate-N 6300 (Puma Peak) 3x3 AGN

Anyway, you guys seem to suggest there are much more options, but I have no idea which one to choose. Sorry, I know some stuff, but I've never learned about network cards or frequency bands and whatnot.

/ By the way, the WLAN card I have right now is causing problems with the RealTek audio drivers (audio stuttering) which I could not resolve even by resetting windows or updating literally everything, so that card is not an option.

Here's a chart I complied from Lenovo's part list docs:

I would suggest copying the part number into eBay to see a more detailed description other than just the name (which may or may not be useful)... Hope that helps!

Re: Thinkpad T430 - replace WLAN card and add WWAN card

Regarding the wwan card:
if you you're in Germany, do not plan to use wwan broadband service in the USA, would like to have 3g+LTE capabilities, get mc7710, the only LTE modem from the list above for European operators.

If 3g service is enough, get Gobi 3000 (mc8355) or H5321gw. The first one is capable to work almost in any 3g network worldwide, the latter is for European netwoks mainly, but a bit fatser.

Regarding the Intel wlan cards:
your list is a bit wrong (Intel 1000 is excess) and not full (Intel 2200 is missing), compare them on the Intel site
https://ark.intel.com/compare/66888,59468,59474,59471

Note, Intel 6300 needs 3x3 wlan antennas in order to reach all features and speed up to 450 mbps.

not a good advice. Fru_bom file (the link is in the post #3 above) is enough.

BTW, the list in your post, EricX, isn't completed.
