I just bought my lenovo thinkpad t470 thinking that it would be a beast of a machine. But to my dismay, the touchpad stopped working and i have to attach a mouse to use the system.
Is there any solution to it. This is pathetic to be honest

Dude, I had the same issue with my Lenovo L470 and I found a temporal solution for it:
Let me share with you what I did:
1.- Right-Clicking on Computer's icon and selecting Manage.
2.- Find "Manage Devices".
3.- Inside "System Devices" you'll find: "Synaptics SMBus Driver", you must disable it and wait for a few seconds and after doing that, your touchpad it's going to start working again.
I hope this temporal solution helps you.
The main issue is on "Synaptics SMBus Driver" system library, Synaptics has to release a new driver update to recover all touchpad functions again.

I'm having the same issue as you, with the same laptop, but i'm not that great at computing.
Could you please tell me how to get onto the Computer icon and Manage Devices?

You may try pressing "Windows" key + "X" key to display a menu within you'll be able to access to Device Manager.
I hope this information helps you to recover your touchpad's basic function.
