Thinkpad T480 M2 2242 SSD

2018-03-08, 18:54 PM

I just bought a second SSD (Transcend 256GB MTS400 M2 2242) for my Lenovo T480 but it is not recognized in the BIOS nor Windows. The laptop came with a 512 GB M2 2280 SSD.

When I plug the same SSD in my old E540, it works straight away. The old 16GB SDD from the E540 also does not work in the T480.

I read this was also an issue with the T470 until a BIOS upgrade. Did anybody have the same issue or could Lenovo check this issue?

Hello and welcome,

The SSD you list is a SATA device.  The WWAN/SSD slot is described in the base spec as PCIe - and doesn't mention SATA.  It may be that SATA devices are not supported in that slot.

http://psref.lenovo.com/syspool/Sys/PDF/ThinkPad/ThinkPad%20T480/ThinkPad_T480_Platform_Specifications.pdf

"Some: 128GB M.2 SSD / PCIe NVMe, PCIe 3.0 x 2, 16Gb/s,
in WWAN slot as 2nd Storage, mutually exclusive with WWAN"

Thanks, that will be the problem. I checked various posts and only found information about T470 as the T480 is still new. You can use the SATA for the T470 but not for the T480 anymore.

T470:

Some:

DD / SATA 6.0Gb/s, 2.5" wide, 7mm high,Active Protection System

Some:

SSD / SATA 6.0Gb/s, 2.5" wide, 7mm high (e.g. xxxGB SSD)

Some:

M.2 SSD / PCIe NVMe, PCIe 3.0 x 2, 16Gb/s

Some:

128GB M.2 SSD / SATA 6.0Gb/s, in WWAN slot as 2nd Storage

mutually exclusive with WWAN and WiGig

This one comes when ordered in the M2 2242 configuratio with the T480:

M2 2242 PCIe NVMe 128GB from Toshiba with a number of KBG30ZMT128G, Lenovo P/N: 00UP650, SSSOL24702

Just putting this here so you don't make the same mistake as I did and order the wrong SSD!

Does this mean if I want the 512GB HDD, I can only add at most 128GB 2242 PCIe SSD to the WWAN slot?

Or I just give up the HDD option, and use up to 1TB 2280 SSD.

Thanks.

That means that the current offering for that 2242 slot from Lenovo is a 128GB SSD.

There aren't many options currently for NVMe SSDs in that physical size.  Toshiba has announced SSDs up to 480GB in that size but I can't speak to current availability.

I do confirm that my Transcend M.2 2242 512Go card is also not recognized while it is working in an USB3/SATA adapter.

Besides the Toshiba in the works, there is also a LiteOn T11 NVME 2242 currently available that people are using, but as far as I know you still have to order it directly from Chna.

Wow, this is a complete disaster.  I require 2 drives and have ordered the Transcend 512GB SATA drive, expecting it to work... not so, as indicated in earlier posts.  What options do I really have at this stage?  2242 form factor PCIe drives are non-existent, it seems.  Just wait until the market matures slightly?
