Thinkpad T480 - Unstable charging using power bank RAVPower 27000mAh 85W (100W Max)

Hi,

I just bought AC Outlet Portable Charger RAVPower 27000mAh 85W (100W Max). The AC adapter of my ThinkPad T480 is rated at 65W max. So I think the power bank should be capable to charge my laptop.

I tested it to charge my Lenovo ThinkPad T480. The output is unstable. My laptop LCD keeps flickering because the battery keeps switching between charged and discharged.

I tried to charge another laptop like ASUS A series and a PC monitor. And it works fine. Charging my Lenovo from house AC power sockets also works like normal.

Could anyone give me advice on what is the problem with Lenovo? Any particular setting on my windows 10 or Lenovo BIOS  that I need to change?

You could see my recording here https://drive.google.com/file/d/1mPBF4hO1tta-9SXwZEVSe3wK7jBzSxIR/view?usp=sharing

Also, the picture of my laptop AC adapter is here https://drive.google.com/file/d/1EFRpZJR36EmD4se92NHeIb8u_bFMkBeJ/view?usp=sharing

Here are the output labels at the back of the power bank : https://drive.google.com/file/d/1P6M0CgjbemxctbQFrTG7sDH9SmFWbmub/view?usp=sharing

I've tried adjusting here and there in the power option of the Lenovo BIOS, but still no result: https://drive.google.com/file/d/1FWeo6cOAQDB3a-w_7Yz8zKKoYyA8cldi/view?usp=sharing

Any help is appreciated.

Thank you

The first thing I would try is switching the laptop into  "airplane mode"  this is a setting in Lenovo Vantage,

and makes the laptop less power hungry.

If that fixes it you have at least one solution.....

Let us know if that works?

Re: Thinkpad T480 - Unstable charging using power bank RAVPower 27000mAh 85W (100W Max)

Thanks Jim, for the advice.

I tried to switch the laptop into "airplane mode", wifi inactive but it didn't help. The problem still occurs.

But I've tried to use the type-c output of the RAV power bank, and it manages to give a stable charging power to the Lenovo T480. The battery status stays in charging while it connected to the power bank.

But using the type-c output of the RAV power bank, it could only give the weakest supply of power to the Lenovo battery. So, even though the Lenovo battery is in charging state, the percentage of the battery keeps dropping but slower.

(airplane mode active, but wifi active, and power mode is in best performance).

Re: Thinkpad T480 - Unstable charging using power bank RAVPower 27000mAh 85W (100W Max)

I managed to get a sample of different Lenovo 90W adapter (different specs with 65W). Using the 90W adaptor + RAV power bank + my Lenovo T480, I manage to get a stable charging state.

My guess since I can't get another exact 65W adaptor for testing :
1. My 65W adaptor is broken (but I can get stable charging state from house AC socket).

2. The output voltage of the RAV power bank doesn't really match the input voltage of my 65W adapter.

Re: Thinkpad T480 - Unstable charging using power bank RAVPower 27000mAh 85W (100W Max)

I forgot, my friend's 90W adapter come with docking. I think this one : https://www.lenovo.com/us/en/accessories-and-monitors/docking/universal-cable-docks-usb/Thinkpad-USB... https://www.amazon.com/Lenovo-ThinkPad-UltraDock-40A90090US-Packaged/dp/B01N9RW2A3?SubscriptionId=AK... So the setup is like this : RAVpower -> adapter -> docking -> lenovo T480 Not sure whether the dock will change the power delivery or not. But my last guess remains the same.
