Thinkpad T510 can't read discs

2012-05-24, 23:41 PM

I'm having a problem with my T510 where the GT30N CD/DVD drive almost always fails to even recognize a DVD or CD that is inserted.  The drive is powered on (I've seen that problem) and I've tried upgrading to the latest firmware for the drive.  I haven't updated the BIOs, but I've read the notes for each version and don't see a reference to any of them fixing optical drive problems.  I've also tried reseating the drive after a "safely remove" and a full shut-down and battery removal.  Sometimes it works and sometimes it doesn't.  I also tried changing the power management settings and one time it worked after I took it off of "max battery" mode, but it stopped working after that.

What am I missing other than "I need a replacement optical drive"?

Thanks!

Check the firware is updated. It is NOT automatic so download the firmware package and it will check and update valid drives. Other than that and your drivers are working something has failed.

hi Mdtabron,

Its hard to dertermined what excatly is casing the issue, but if i were to diagnose by first look i would say the Optical drive may need to be replaced. howere before we can come to that conclusion i would like youto try this fix from microsoft :

http://support.microsoft.com/mats/cd_dvd_drive_problems/en-us

Please do let us know if it works,in the mean time i'll try to dive further into this for you.

First I confirmed that the drive firmware was in fact installed, then I tried the Microsoft fix.  I saw a confirmation  message that the fix was successfully installed, but the drive still won't read DVDs even though it does play audio CDs.

Thanks for the advice.  Let me know if there's anything else to try.  I don't want to buy a replacement drive if it's going to have the same problem.
