Upgrade ThinkPad T580 from SATA HDD to M.2 NVMe SSD - parts needed?

2018-03-09, 20:46 PM

Hi guys,

I just bought the T580 with their cheapest SATA HDD so that I can upgrade myself, but I realise that there's not an M.2 slot available for the upgrade drive (Samsung 960 Pro).

I did a little bit of research, and I found these FRU's:

01YR457    Tachi-2(20L9/20LA/20LB/20LC) M.2 Adapter ASM for Tachi,TC-2
01YR466    Tachi-2(20L9/20LA/20LB/20LC) M.2 Adapter Cable,TC-2

I can't find a place where to source these. Can anybody point me in the right direction?

Thank you in advance.

If your laptop has a 2x PCIe3.0 interface, the read/write speed is limited to 1700/1300 mb/s. So that 960Pro would be a total waste.

So far what we know from the T480 is that with the discrete GFX the PCIe is limited to 2x and there are rumors that the version with only integrated graphics might be a full 4 lane PCIe interface.

Something to consider before you go spending.

On a personal note, I have not noticed a difference between a standard SATA 3 SSD and an NVMe drive in everyday computing. Unless you read/write (especially write) very large files (>15GB) sequentially all day, and you make money from it, the 960Pro is an overkill. If your use is not as described above, a SATA ssd will be just fine (and far cheaper).

Thanks for your reply.

As per hardware reference for T580:

Some: M.2 SSD / PCIe NVMe, PCIe 3.0 x4, 32Gb/s
Some: 128GB M.2 SSD / PCIe NVMe, PCIe 3.0 x 2, 16Gb/s

Going back to my request: I would still like to obtain the parts.

Can anyone help?

0 results found for the above part FRU's. Perhaps there are some other resources I can try my luck on?

The cable 00UR496 is found. It is the same as that used in the T470 m.2 to 2.5 adapter.

For the first part, the bracket, are you sure about the FRU. If you google it the best result is this post and no other mention.

The T470 bracket is 01AX994 and you can find it here:

https://lenovo.encompass.com/item/11093685/Lenovo/01AX994/Ct470_Adapter_Hdd_Asm_Bracket

If the T480 or the T580 use a different bracket maybe it is not in stock yet? But I'd find this very weird, as the brackets/adapters are common for many generations.

Thanks for the links, I'll definitely check them out.

I used this reference, to locate the FRU numbers:
https://thinkpads.org/fru/?t=T580

I am not sure if this is accurate.

I'd like to report that I ordered both parts; the enclosure seems to be OK, but the cable is not right. The cable connector that connects to the enclosure is OK; but the motherboard connector is wider than the other end of the cable.

So I have yet to find a matching cable.

You're looking for 00UR496 for the cable and 01AX994 for the adapter. These are for the T480 and I can only assume (but this is my assumption so please cross-check) that they are identical to the T580. They are both in stock at encompass.

Edit: For the T580 I see a different FRU for the wire: 01YR466 (currently out of stock) and for the adapter: 01YR457  (also out of stock and a bit expensive).

So there might be a difference between T480 and T580. Someone will have to try it and feedback.
