Upgrade wifi card for T420

2017-10-15, 22:40 PM

Hi Everyone,

I have a Thinkpad T420 and want to replace the wifi card in here. Currently it's an Intel Centrino Wireless-N 1000, single band. I don't really want to spend too much on the new card, hopefully around £5-10.

Any suggestions for a better dual band card or better which won't need a Bios mod i.e. a card that will work with plug and play if there is such a thing and has a Windows 10 driver for it?

Thanks in advance.

You can only use a card that was originly sold on the T420.  There are no dual band cards.

Aren't the 6205 and 6300 dual band?

Looks like the 6206 FRU 60Y3253 is available for $10-20US.  Keep in mind that a "vanilla" 6205 won't work.  It must have a Lenovo FRU from the parts list.

[edit to add] Just checked my venerable T420.  It has a 6205 installed, and it's definitely dual band.

Yes.  Those cards are dual-band a/g/n.  Today, I tend to think of dual-band cards in terms of ac.

Thanks for the responses everyone.

What does FRU mean? Does it need to have been approved by Lenovo or something like that? A quick search shows it as being a Field Replaceable Unit. How does that differ from others?

Thanks again.

Having an FRU number means that the card has been "branded" by Lenovo with modified firmware.  Modified subsystem IDs IIRC.

That's what gets checked against the whitelist by BIOS at POST.

The FRU number will be printed on the card.
