Upgrading T520 screen from 1366 x 768 to 1920 x 1080

I just purchased a T520 laptop. It seems pretty great but unfortunately I opted for the 15.6" HD (1366x768) screen.

I'd love to upgrade but have no idea of the best way to go about doing this. The best option I've found is to buy the 15.6" FHD (1920x1080) screen on ebay and replace it myself. Is the T520 40 pin? Is this a good approach? Thanks for any advice!

It'd void your warranty... Maybe consider sending it back and reordering it with a FHD panel?

It's also pretty hard to source the exact same 95% gamut panel found from the factory, but not impossible:

Re: Upgrading T520 screen from 1366 x 768 to 1920 x 1080

I never thought about the warranty aspect... depending on the costs I'd like to go ahead and reorder it with the FHD.

That thread has some good ideas I'll keep in mind but the warranty is nice to have around.

Thanks for the advice!

Re: Upgrading T520 screen from 1366 x 768 to 1920 x 1080

Hi!

So how did you solved this problem tgernz? Did you change the LCD for FHD one?

I am thinking about the same thing - so as long as I forget the warranty it should work right? I mean - I want to exchange my 1366x768 screen for FHD - AUO B156HW01 V4 ; 04W1544 ( http://support.lenovo.com/en_US/product-and-parts/detail.page?DocID=PD011778 ). It should be just the matter of switching LCD units - no cables or plastics etc. right?

Btw. I have also found B156HW01 V5 display - does anyone has any idea what is the difference in these displays?

One more thing - did anyone tried to change the lcd for the touch panel ( 04W1511 )? I guess you would have to change other parts as well: LCD bezel assembly (touch panel); Hinge kit (touch panel); LED cable (touch panel); LCD rear cover assembly (touch panel)... But, does it work after that?

Thanks for help.

Re: Upgrading T520 screen from 1366 x 768 to 1920 x 1080

Swapping out your LCD display panel will not void your warranty if you do not damage anything in the process of replacement, and if you keep the original display for reinstallation should you need to use the warranty.

------

I performed a 1366x768 to 1920x1080 display upgrade on a friend's W510, and can confirm that, at least for his laptop, the cable for the 1366x768 display is a 40-pin dual-channel LVDS cable that will support a 1920x1080-resolution display.

------

Regarding the LCD model: The AUO B156HW01 V4 (same FHD display shipped with the T5x0 and W5x0) is one of the best 15.6" 1920x1080 displays available, but the AUO B156HW01 V5 is one of the worst (ironically). The V4 is matte, has excellent contrast, and has a high color gamut (95% NTSC). The V5 is glossy (not necessarily a bad thing, but is a difference between the two), has very poor contrast, and has a standard gamut (60% NTSC).

------

As for buying the AUO B156HW01 V4: The best place that I have found to order this exact part is here: http://www.laptopscreen.com/English/screen-part-number/B156HW01%20V.4/

They only charge $89 + shipping for the part, which is a particularly good price for this display.

Re: Upgrading T520 screen from 1366 x 768 to 1920 x 1080

There's also apparently a V6 and a V7...

Really do like the 95% gamut FHD though.

Replacing the LCD will indeed void your warranty, but you might be able to drop the original panel back in if you ever need to and hope no one notices lol.

Re: Upgrading T520 screen from 1366 x 768 to 1920 x 1080

The V7 is the glossy version of the 95% gamut FHD display, so if glossy is preferred over matte then it can be bought here: http://www.laptopscreen.com/English/screen-part-number/B156HW01%20V.7/

"Replacing the LCD will indeed void your warranty, but you might be able to drop the original panel back in if you ever need to and hope no one notices lol. " <-- Which I suppose would be essentially the same thing as not voiding your warranty Smiley Tongue

Re: Upgrading T520 screen from 1366 x 768 to 1920 x 1080

Thanks for assurance - I will order it and try to exchange it.

I somewhere (on forum?) found this link: http://www.tftcentral.co.uk/articles/laptop_panel_parts.htm

it confirms what you saying - the V5 is crap and best solution is to go for V4 (at least for me...)

You can return the machine to Lenovo (if you bought it direct) within 21 days. Then you can just re-order it with the display you want.

well.. thats how it works in US right? Smiley Happy

Even if it would be possible to choose the components of your laptop (or buy directly from Lenovo at all) in my place...

I bought it from one guy and it is definitely older Smiley Wink
