Upgrading a SATA SSD T460s to a PCIe SSD

2016-04-01, 12:21 PM

Hi

I'm considering buying a T460S (Model 20F90044IV) & would have been happy with a PCIe SSD but they're still not on offer in my country.

Does anyone know weather I'll be able to upgrade later to a PCIe SSD drive? Do all T460s come ready for PCIe?

Thanks in advance!!!

Yes you can. Both AHCI and NVMe (M-key only) is accepted in the M2 slot.

hey thanks, but would the model that sells with the regular ssd have this alleged M2 slot at all as I assume it's not even required for the normal ssd no?

It's all assumption until you see something official from Lenovo. I am just confirming that my new T460s runs with a Samsung SM951NVMe and my new X1 Yoga runs with a Samsung 950pro NVMe. (They both came with AHCI SSD from Lenovo)

All T460s (not T460 or T460p) can accept a single M.2 2280 drive.  This drive can be either SATA or PCIe/NVMe.

This helped me too

When you upgraded to the SM951 NVMe drive, did you have to install a driver for it first (before creating a clone of the SATA drive that the OS was installed on)?   Or does the T460s BIOS or firmware recognize the new SSD already?

I suppose even if you did a clean install of Windows, you might have had to provide a driver for it (the SM951). Thanks for any help, I'm considering upgrading to that drive as well.
