Vista Ultimate - NOT 64bit? How to make it 64bit

I just ordered a new T500 and it hasn't been shipped yet.  When I placed my order, I saw the Vista Business 64 option, but I also saw the Vista Ultimate with Downgrade to XP option, so I chose the latter, thinking that Ultimate would also be a 64-bit operating system.  After all, selecting the option cost more than the Business 64 version.

In checking the Hardware Maintenance manual, however, it lists the OSs offered on the T500 as including Vista Ultimate in 32bit mode only.

Yikes!  I need a 64bit OS!  Is there anything I can do?  My understanding is that Vista Ultimate, as shipped by Microsoft in a boxed configuration, combes in both 32 and 64 bit editions.  Will Lenovo ship me both versions?  Is there an easy upgrade path?  Or am I better off trying to get my order changed back to a Business 64 version?  Is that even possible?

Thank you.

Re: Vista Ultimate - NOT 64bit? How to make it 64bit

Replying to my own post -- ISSUE RESOLVED:

I contacted sales, where they explained the following:  Selecting "Windows Vista Ultimate with XP Professional Downgrade" as your OS choice means your laptop will ship with XP (32 bit) installed, along with a DVD for Vista Ultimate (32 bit).

Once I learned that, I received their assistance in changing my order to the Vista Business 64 edition.

I want to point out that I received absolutely EXCELLENT customer service from various Lenovo people today, and I haven't even received the product yet.  If that's any indication, I'm sure I'm going to be a very happy customer.

Thank you.

You could have run the anytime upgrade. Would have been easier and cheaper Smiley Wink

Hello incadinka, congratulations on getting a new computer and for choosing Vista. I am glad they were able to accommodate you and get you the Vista 64 you wanted. I just wanted to pass along a link to a performance and tuning guide over at the Microsoft.com site. It should help you get your Vista up and running smooth.  http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?familyid=ab377598-a637-432c-a3c8-1607ab629201&displa...  good luck and feel free to ask if you have any questions.

Re: Vista Ultimate - NOT 64bit? How to make it 64bit

For those missing two basic system devices see here .

Microsoft licenses 32-bit and 64-bit versions of the same OS version as one. If you buy a 32 bit OS from Microsoft you can go to their website and download the 64 bit version. For OEM preloads that website just references the manufacturers.

Lenovo doesn't accept this licensing and steadfastly refuses to switch your system once you have got the 32 bit version. Some people have managed to get the 64 bit recovery disks as a favour from Lenovo sales, see for instance here . I find it ridiculous to be dependent on the mood of individual Lenovo employees to get what Microsoft has already included in their license.

T500: Vista 32, 2.8GHz, 4GB RAM, 15.4" 1680x1050, 500GB 7200rpm, ATI Radeon HD3650 + Intel 4500MHD. T42: XP, 1.7GHz, 2GB RAM, 14.1" 1024x768, 250GB PATA, ATI Radeon 7500.

Re: Vista Ultimate - NOT 64bit? How to make it 64bit

I had exactly the same Lenovo experience. "Sorry, no can do....". My option was to return the T500 (with restocking fee) and purchase something else.

This goes into my  "Very bad customer service" presentation.

Unless things are very different in Sweden from the rest of the world, you can't download any Microsoft operating system from a public Microsoft web site.

Cheers,

Re: Vista Ultimate - NOT 64bit? How to make it 64bit

Yes Bill, you are right, I remembered wrong.

You go to their website and order the 64-bit Vista DVD paying shipping costs only. The point is still valid though, Microsoft considers a license for Vista to be a license for both 32-bit and 64-bit. For some reason Lenovo doesn't.
