Where to find T420 ultrabay caddy?

Where's the best place to get an ultra bay hard drive caddy for the T420?

I know there was one on the Lenovo shop not too long ago, but when I went to go buy it it was gone. I think it's super weird that they don't stock an official one. I can't seem to find a retailer online that sells new ones. I'd rather not buy used, but all the ones I see on Amazon are from sketchy personal sellers. But if I need to go down that route, what size caddy do I need for the T420?

Thanks.

Re: Where to find T420 ultrabay caddy?

'afternoon.

welcome to the community!

from the tabook, i see the following accessories listed for the T420:

   Ultrabay Enhanced 12.7mm
Serial ATA Hard Drive 9.5mm Bay Adapter III 43N3412 ann 06/23/09
Serial ATA Hard Drive 12.7mm Bay Adapter III 0A65623 ann 02/28/12

you could search the Lenovo store (or elsewhere) by the part numbers.

hth.

You need a 12.7mm thick adapter (not 9.5mm.)

I bought a compatible Ultrabay adapter on eBay for $10 that fits and works great to hold an HDD, There are many sellers on eBay, mostly from Hong Kong and China. Choose one with lots of sales and high ratings, and you should be OK.

does the 9.5mm adapter work, albeit with a gap?

Yes, it does work.  I have both.  The gap is somewhat a cosmetic issue, but dust can get in as well.

There's a simple hack for that: T420 and ultrabay HDD, they don't quite fit... Smiley Wink

Re: Where to find T420 ultrabay caddy?

@ hausman : i have a cheap no name caddy 12,7mm bought from Ebay. Inside i put the original Segate 7200rpm sataII drive, but all the diagnosis programs say that the drive is running at 1,5Gb sata I......how is your drive showing? Since ultra bay connection speed is advertised as sata III what would be the problem.

From what i know there is only a pass-throug conection, no other hard limitation. so whats up with that low speed?

Re: Where to find T420 ultrabay caddy?

I just put two different HDDs in the caddy and tested them with HWiNFO64. Both drives, one a Hitachi, the other a Seagate, were labelled as 7,200rpm and SATA-II/3.0Gb/s. In both cases HWiNFO reported "Serial ATA 3Gb/s."

Re: Where to find T420 ultrabay caddy?

ok, can you link your caddy, if you can remember where did you bought it from?
i only have the 500Gb Segate momentus Sata 2 drive that came with the laptop.
i know i should not be any limitation but maybe the actual internal wiring of the caddy can influence this?

Re: Where to find T420 ultrabay caddy?

This is the adapter I have. www.ebay.ca/itm/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=280888767879

IIRC the same seller has the 12.7mm adapters but you'll have to confirm that.
