Which CPU option do you recommend for T480?

2018-07-31, 15:05 PM

Hello, I am considering to buy a T480. I want a laptop that has no heat (uncomfortably hot when using it on the laps), noisy fan nor thermal throttling issues when doing productivity work, playing youtube 4K videos, perhaps some CAD and Matlab, connecting to a 4K monitor and TB3 dock, etc. In this case, which CPU option do you recommend?

If you are running  CAD/Productivity Software, it may be worth considering P Series.

If you subject a CPU to a high load, it will get hotter, and require more cooling (more fan noise).

If you are outputting 4K and doing CAD, a T480 with the NVIDIA GeForce MX150 GDDR5 2GB and an i7 may be more suitable, however, the most accurate way to spec out a machine is to look at a specific Application' s reccommended PC Specs and go from there. (If you opt for a T480 with a additional GPU, it may run hotter / louder as the GPU will also require cooling)

Thank you.

I considered the P Series but it is too heavy for me. My plan is to get an ultra-portable that can do productivity work and play 4K videos without heat, noisy fan, thermal throttling issues. Within a few months later, build a workstation with powerful GPU more RAM. I am considering the T480, X1 Carbon Gen 6 and Yoga 920.

I have been in very warm places with my Lenovo laptops and they can handle the heat fine.

I have not tried Death Valley yet with 115°F temperatures

I have the i7 + mx150 t480
I'll say: wear pants! But otherwise you CAN have it on your lap, but make sure to get the big battery for a bit of space between you thighs and the bottom of the laptop.
It gets hot, and also hotter than my old t530, but I think it might be due the smaller form factor, smaller heatsink = more fan, more heat.
Then again, my dear t480 is a whole kilogram lighter, way faster, has a better screen, and is unstoppable in battery-life..

But the t480 throttles, 517 in cinebench, my old old desktop, devils canyon, is 300 points faster than this. i7-8550U which "should be" at 4ghz, it's around 2.3ghz at full load.. :/

I consider the T480 over Yoga 920 and Carbon X1 due to its larger chasis which might have better thermal but if this is the case, its only advangate is very long battery life and upgradibility.

Lenovo indulges in whitelists which make upgrades uncessarily hard to do

I have found repalcement ROMs for my old machines, I expect other models have their respective fixes too

Do you mean it is difficult for me to upgrade the RAM and SSD myself using parts bought even from Lenovo or only parts I order from Amazon or Newegg?

The SSD and RAM are ok, I have found Wi-Fi cards to be a pain in the butt

my X220 has a 802.11ac card in it that is light years more sopisticated than it came with originaly, it connects much more easily etc
