Windows shows wrong battery percentage on T480

2018-08-09, 12:05 PM

Even though I have about 80% battery, windows thinks I have 44% only. This is bad because when one of the batteries gets discharged, windows decides it has reached critical levels and hibernates the system. This started happening after I enabled battery charge threshold and set the batteries to charge only until 80% and only when below 40%. I tried uninstalling the batteries from the device manager but it didn't help.

I'm trying to reproduce this on my T480 to see what is going on.  I've never seen a situation like your screenshot where Windows reports 44% in one place in 81% in another place

Are you using the same batteries that originally shipped in the system?

No, my laptop was shipped with a 72Wh external battery, which I later replaced with the 24Wh battery. I'm not sure if this is related but it might be as I don't recall such problems with the old battery. But anyways, I used it only for a couple of weeks so I'm not certain.

Have you rebooted since you changed batteries?  I mean reboot and not shutdown.  Because Windows 10 shutdown is not a real shutdown unless you disable fast startup.

Well now that you say it this way, I'm not sure. I have both restarted and shutdown and reboot but without setting any other special options. I also got some windows updates and lenovo updates (the latest today, which included BIOS update).

Can you advise me how to do clean reboot?

Reboot is from start menu.  To do full shutdown, must hold down shift key when you select shutdown from start menu.  Otherwise it's a hybrid shutdown kind of like hibernate, even though Microsoft doesn't tell you this.

If you did a BIOS update today, then it made you reboot the computer.  I'd like you to test again and see if this problem still happens.

Oh yeah, the screenshot is from after the BIOS update. I then used ran on battery for a while and when Battery 1 reached 7% I got a message that I'm reaching critical level. I then switched the slider back and forth and Windows suddenly said I had another 47% battery and the system continued discharging the second battery. I have also noticed that Windows sometimes updates its battery status when I open the Lenovo app (Vantage).

Can you check that the battery latches on the bottom of the laptop are both in the locked position?  One of them is spring-loaded but the other one isn't.  You have to manually push it to the locked position.

And when I say I moved the slide, I mean the power mode slide that can be seen on the screen shot.
