can i disable 16 gb ssd on the t450

I have a 16gb ssd drive and 500gb.  I am trying to image the pc via sccm 2012 r2.  The 16 gb ssd seems to be more trouble than it is worth.  Can I disable the drive via bios or some other means?  It seems to casue issues during the partion and applying wim.

Re: can i disable 16 gb ssd on the t450

Good day and welcome to the community.

It might be simplest to just pull it out.

If you don't already have it, here's your hardware manual: https://download.lenovo.com/pccbbs/mobiles_pdf/t450_hmm_en_sp40a27225_01.pdf

Manual pages 70-71 & 75-77 should illustrate what's involved.

Hope this helps a bit.

Regards.

Re: can i disable 16 gb ssd on the t450

Hmmm... ok.

Since the SSD resides in the slot common for use of WWAN cards, what happens if you disable WWAN in BIOS?

Check under Security > I/O Port Access > Wireless WAN

Regards.

Re: can i disable 16 gb ssd on the t450

Usually small cache SSD sits in the 3rd m.2 slot, not a combo wwan+ssd one.

Nothing should happen for the SSD if the wwan port is disabled as the wwan interface lines belong USB + USIM + PCI bus conttol line, while SATA interface should have separate lines via switch.

Re: can i disable 16 gb ssd on the t450

Good point about the interface lines, but the HMM shows the same m.2 slot for either the WWAN or cache SSD. Unless I'm missing it, there is no 3rd m.2 slot.

Cheers.

Re: can i disable 16 gb ssd on the t450

The 3rd m.2 slot is an option for models with HDD installed, it's placed under internal battery on the separate plate, connected with mobo via additional cable.
https://forums.lenovo.com/t5/ThinkPad-T400-T500-and-newer-T/T450s-m-2-SSD/m-p/2143238#M101524

HMM ignores the feature 3rd slot related while the fru_bom lists the parts. As well PSREF mentiones the slot for cache drive.

Thanks.

Just so the the OP has all the information, the link quoted above details the T450s.

The T450 also shares this possible hidden 3rd m.2 configuration, based on its FRU BOM, at least.

Cheers.

Re: can i disable 16 gb ssd on the t450

So can I disable it in the bios?  The reason i am asking is that it seems to mess up the install to the larger drive.  When i boot with a windows 7 install usb stick the 16gb drive is drive 0 and the 500 gb drive is drive 1.  In our old sccm env I can format and partition disk 1 then apply the os to disk 1 part 1.  With the new winpe usb boot media it shows the 16 gb as disk 1 and the 500 gb drive as disk 0.  I thought this was determined by hardware not os version?  I am just trying to figure out a way to deploy and boot from the 500gb drive.  The task sequence worsk fine on a 1 disk system but does not with this system.

Re: can i disable 16 gb ssd on the t450

I ran into this exact SCCM issue - intermittently - in our environment with the 16 GB cache drive on the T440s - I could not find a way to disable it in the BIOS. Our workaround was to have 2 separate "Format and Partition Disk" steps in the task sequence and put conditions on those steps to check the drive size and apply accordingly. For this to work, the steps need to be set to apply a variable to the partition and the Install OS step later set to apply the OS to "logical drive letter stored in a variable" not a specific disk #.

For example:

1. Format and Partition Disk (this will apply if the Disk # is 0)

RUN only if the following WMI Query returns true: SELECT * FROM Win32_DiskDrive WHERE Index = "0" AND Size > 21474836480

2. Format and Partition Disk (this will apply if things are swapped and the main drive Disk # is 1)

RUN only if the following WMI Query returns true: SELECT * FROM Win32_DiskDrive WHERE Index = "0" AND Size <= 21474836480

Hopefully this helps!
