lenovo T410, upgrade (add more) memory, hdd to ssd.

Hi. lenovors:

I recently purchased a refurbished lenovo T410 from the newegg. Upon receiving it, I have been in love with it. But two weeks ago, I encountered [0xc000000f] error message while I was doing a resetting it to out of the box condition. Since it was around thanksgiving, I decided to upgrade the computer. I bought an 8G memory and 256G ssd. Now I am having the following problems:

1. With the original hdd in, windows was fine, I switched out the one original 2g memory to the new 8G memory. After I turned on the computer, it passed on the window log (starting) without moving. Basically, it was stuck after swapping the 2g original memory with a newly bought 8G memory.

The original memory is Hynix, HMT325S6BFR8C-H9,
SODIMM, 2G, 204 Pin, PC-10600 (Bus Type), 1.5ns (Cycle Time), CL9, 1333Mhz (Data Transfer Rate), 166Mhz (Memory Clock)

The new 8g memory is: Team 8GB 204-Pin DDR3 SO-DIMM DDR3 1600 Laptop Memory Model TSD38192M1600C11-E

When I put the new memory in, got into BIOS, the computer recognized it, it show the total memory as 10G.

Please advise me if anything I could do to get this memory work out, otherwise, I have to return the memory back to newegg.

2. I swapped out the old hdd to new ssd. It does not have issue with hardware. Since my old hdd has [0xc000000f] error message, I installed my own copy of windows7_pro_with_SP1. The windows7 was installed successfully. However, now my wireless, wire internet connection seem not work, also, when I was with 'old' hdd, my computer supported dual monitors, now it only support the laptop display (video card driver not presented?). I guess I need to get many drivers. Could someone give me a list on what the drivers I need, and where to download them.

Thanks for your help.

The ThinkPad T410 doesn't support 8 GB DDR3 modules. You need two 4 GB modules.

Hello Nikon,

You can find the drivers for your unit at this link. Once on that page, click on Drivers & Software which is beside Product Home on the left of the blue bar.

Make sure to select your OS at the top.

Re: lenovo T410, upgrade (add more) memory, hdd to ssd.

Hi Peter:

Thanks for the advice. I got to the page and did find the whole list of driver, and one driver is associated several versions. I do not know which version should I download.

I also searched the forums and found out the following:

https://forums.lenovo.com/t5/ThinkPad-T400-T500-and-newer-T/T420-Adapter-Drivers/m-p/3432127

&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&

below is the solution.

Go to SUPPORT above, enter T420 in the search box.  Download the ethernet driver onto a flash drive or other media.  Install it on the T420.

Once you can get the T online go back to downloads and install ThinkVantage System Update.  Use it to scan for and install drivers appropriate for your laptop.

&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&

I wanted to follow this method. I downloaded ethernet driver for T410. I installed it according to the instruction. Then I was stuck at the point that I still could not get internet connection (with wire directly connected to the computer).

Please help me more. I am pretty green on Lenovo and I purchased a refurbished one.

Thanks.

Dan

Re: lenovo T410, upgrade (add more) memory, hdd to ssd.

nikon1234,

despite your laptop is refurbished the best way to download and install needed Lenovo drivers and updates is to use the ThinkVantage System Update (TVSU) tool:
http://support.lenovo.com/us/en/products/Laptops-and-netbooks/ThinkPad-T-Series-laptops/ThinkPad-T41...

Note, do not update the BIOS via TVSU.

Regarding the issues with network adapters and others:
- do the adapters work and look properly in the Device Manager, w/out errors?
- what's the type of the Windows image you installed? Is it a ms original image or a custom package?

Re: lenovo T410, upgrade (add more) memory, hdd to ssd.

Hi.  x220forme:

Thanks for the answer you provided. I have downloaded ThinkVantage System Update.exe from the link you have provided. I have also installed the thinkvantage. However, I still cannot connect to internet. There is one small icon with a little circle, I clicked it, it then showed up Broadband Connection, clicked it, it prompted me to input the User name and Password. I keyed in my internet provider's User name and password, it showed the following:

connecting through WAN Miniport (PPPOE)

Then it showed it cannot connect the internet.

The network adaptor works fine. I did the following:

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
DETERMINING WHICH VERSION IS INSTALLED

  1. Click Start.
  2. Right-click Computer, and then click Properties.
  3. At the left pane, click Device Manager.
  4. Double-click the Network adapters category.
  5. Double-click Intel(R) 82577LM Gigabit Network Connection.
  6. Click the Driver tab.
  7. Check Driver Version.

My version is 11.13.51.0

My window image is a custom version.

thanks.

Dan

Re: lenovo T410, upgrade (add more) memory, hdd to ssd.

What type of the internet connection would you like to establish? LAN (Ethernet to the provider's/home router), WLAN (WiFi to the provider's home router), WWAN (via cellular modem, laptop built-in or USB connected)? If the router is there, is it connected to the provider and works properly?

Re: lenovo T410, upgrade (add more) memory, hdd to ssd.

Also, what drivers/sw/update TVSU has found and has suggested to install? At least, has the Lenovo Power Management Driver been installed?

Re: lenovo T410, upgrade (add more) memory, hdd to ssd.

Hi. x220forme:

thanks for the quick reply.

I was trying to connect the computer to my router using a cable. (LAN (Ethernet to the provider's/home router)).

My router works well, since I have three other computers connecting through wireless. Six months ago, I also restored one of these three computers. After the restore that computer to the factory condition, the only thing I need to do was to click the wireless icon on the task bar, at the bottom of my computer, it then would show a list of connections, one of them was mine. My neighbours signal also appeared there. I then click mine and type in the password I set up for the router, then I could connect the computer.

My plan for lenovo T410 is to first set up the wire connection, then proceed to wireless.

For the TVSU part, I only got the link and downloaded the file through my working computer. I then copied the file onto the lenovo T410. I then double clicked it, followed the prompts and finish installing the TVSU. I do not know how to check those components after I installed it.

After receiving your reply, I checked the Device Manager

  1. Click Start.
  2. Right-click Computer, and then click Properties.
  3. At the left pane, click Device Manager.

I visually checked the list of devices, I do not see the (Power Management Driver) in the list. However, I do see that Network adapters, it is (Intel (R) 82577LM Gigabit Network Connection).

Thanks for the help.

Dan
