"NTLDR is missing" while booting from bay HDD ... whats wrong?

2010-10-31, 11:59 AM

Hello folks -- I am desperating ..... I run a T500 (2082-8WG) with two times XPP on it. One on the first HDD bay which runs well. The 2bd I installed on a HDD in a bay (instead of CD-ROM) which runs perfectly just for a few days. I can use F12 at while booting and choose run the first HDD or the 2nd one without problems. But then, after 10-12 days passed it shows "NTLDR is missing" without any error the times before. It is amazing. I already tried several hints. I was told to install Win XPP with the 2nd HDD inserted in the 1st slot (even dont know why this should make any difference). I did this and again, the same problem. It sucks after a few days (did not count if there is a certain number of tries of days, I guess around 1-2 weeks and several times trying). It seems that BIOS doesnt not recognize the 2nd one after y few days but no clue for what reasons. Any ideas pls? Actually, I should mention, that NTLDR (246kb), NTDETECT.com and a few other system files ARE on the 2nd disk as well(which is called also Preload, like the first one)! Thanks Ignacio

If you unhide Hidden and System files on the first HDD, you can go to the root directory and copy NTLDR and NTDETECT.COM to the other disk. I think EasyBCD can automate this for you.

Check in Disk Management to see if the bootable partition secondary HDD is set to active. Otherwise, you may need to reload XP's NTLDR bootloader using EasyBCD; the MBR may not be picking up on the presence of the necessary files.

Try copying this version of NTLDR onto your secondary drive:

Umm... That file is an archive containing NTLDR and NTDETECT.COM.

You're supposed to extract it to your root directory with something like WinRAR (7zip will open it too).

Weird. What happens if you take the UltraBay HDD out and put it into the primary drive shaft?
