A31 runs very slowly.

2010-02-04, 3:13 AM

A31 running Win XP Pro with 1 gig of Crucial memory.   Hard drive only half full.  did the defrag and checkdisk.  What ever I try to do it takes the A31 a while to do it.   Whether it running a program on the laptop or on the internet everything takes much longer that any other laptop running a 1.5 gigahertz processor.    Any clue where to look.  I am open to suggestions.  The machine works  just very slowly.

Welcome to the forum!

What's the 7-character model number of your A31, 265?-???

Do you still have the stock 4200rpm hard drive, or a newer one?

How many processes do you have running on a freshly booted XP?

Cheers,

George

Hi, I am running a Thinkpad A31  IBM 26523U, Processes 58 and the harddrive is a Travelstar Hitachi ATA/IDE 5400 RPM 40.0 GB.  I have 1 GB in Ram and will be installing 2 GB from Crucialwhen it shows up.  Thanks for any help.  I think 2 GB for XP pro will help. Any ideas?

You could try to slim down that XP that you're running, 58 processes is quite a lot.

Other than that, it should be fine, even with 1GB RAM.

What anti-virus software are you running on it?

Cheers,

George

Well, I'd get rid of that and give Avira a shot...that's what I have on most of my laptops.

Even so, the number of processes should be slimmed down by at least 10-15 in my opinion...you may want to do some research on that...

Good luck.

Cheers,

George
