Access Connections - needs a monthly re-install... why?

2008-05-24, 22:06 PM
I have a T60 and overall I have been very happy with the machine. The one MAJOR problem is Access Connections. The software seems so great and well designed - it works great for about 3 weeks. Then it craps out. My wireless card disables and nothing will bring it back, I try to open AC and it takes over 3 mins to open, and then it says disabled and each time I click enable it crashes. Even using the windows wireless service will not allow me to connect. I get the card working according to windows, but when I do a site survey it comes up with nothing and the wireless LED is not on.

My solution uninstall AC and everything is perfect again. I can re-install AC and I repeat the entire cycle - 3 weeks of hassle-free service, then it craps out again.

I have read in many places that this is a symptom of corrupt profiles. What is corrupting the profiles, and how do I prevent it? Right now I have given up on AC, as a lot of others seem to have. A co-worker of mine has this problem everytime he gets dropped from a WEP secured network. My home network is WEP and I the first symptom of this problem is being dropped from the network.

I am using the latest version of AC (4.52).. I don't think this was a problem when I used the version that came on my computer.... 3.something.

Does someone from Lenovo monitor this forum? If so, can you speak to this problem? If anyone else has this issue, please add your comments here so we can show how big an issue this is.

Cheers,

whiteatom

Hello,

Are you using any kind software that affects the network connection such as a firewall, HIPS or third-party VPN software that might be interfering with the Access Connections, or registry cleaning software that might be invalidating its settings?

No, none whatsoever. This problem occures on a clean factory restore with FireFox and Office 2003 installd.

Digging around on Google, I find a lot of people with these problems... the recommended solutions is always a clean resinstall of AC.

Is there something I can do to make the profiles read-only once they are set up? Is this a software bug that Lenovo is unaware of? Every ThinkPad owner I know has experienced this problem once or twice... in my case it is monthly. As mentioned before, the only consistancy we have been able to deduce is a WEP network.

Thanks!

Still waiting for an solution on this issue. Several re-installs later I gave up on it. I am now using Intel Pro/Wireless for wifi control and it seems fine. Occasionally my card disables itself, but it's much much better.

I'm a bit disappointed with Lenovo's software support on this forum... oh well, this machine probably only has another year in it then I can get off the sinking Microsoft ship and buy an Mac.

While there are a few Lenovo employees roaming around in here helping out on a volunteer basis, this is not an official support channel. Instead, this is designed to be a user-to-user support and discussion forum. You may or may not get an answer directly from one of the Lenovo employees as there are way more of us than them and all of them, even Mark, have full-time jobs doing other things.

Try updating your Access Connections using System UPdate or going to Lenovo's website. The latest version is 5.12 and does not cause the problem you described on either of my two Thinkpads.
