Base System Device missing and USB issues on a T61

2008-05-08, 13:36 PM
Hi,

I just reformatted my T61 and I'm absolutely (or almost) positive I downloaded and installed all of the drivers.  Now in Device Manager I'm showing 'Base System Device' with a question mark showing as a driver that should be installed, but isn't.  Any ideas as to what this is and/or how to rectify the issue?

I was having this issue before I reformatted, but Windows is having issues recognising my USB hard drive.  It works absolutely fine on my desktop machine, but for some reason either my T61 won't outright recognise it or after about 5 minutes, gives me an error that 'Windows cannot recognise this device'.  I have several other USB devices plugged in and they all work fine on those ports.  I have tried switching out ports and it doesn't seem to matter.  About the only thing I haven't done is swap out the cable coming from the drive to my laptop - but since it works fine on my desktop I can't forsee this being the issue.

Suggestions?  Thoughts?  Witty anecdotes?

Thanks!

I also seem to see the USB issue happens after the laptop comes out of sleep.  Case in point: I plugged in my USB hard drive this morning and the drive was fine.  As soon as the computer went into sleep mode and I brought it back out of sleep, it wouldn't recognise the drive.

It's beyond annoying because I use that as my storage drive.

Unfortunaltely you haven't stated which OS you have installed.
Have a look at the driver site to double check you have all you need, for instance the TPM device, Windows supplements etc. There is also a Registry patch to improve USB device detection on resume from sleep for Windows Vista, if you are using Vista?

Sorry, for some reason I thought I'd mentioned I have XP installed.  So yeah, WinXP.

For the T61P, did you also download and install the Intel Chipset driver set from the driver matrix page?  I had exactly the same problem where most of my USB devices did not behave properly - it was because the chipset driver was not missing.  When you download and install that one, you will notice it configuring ALL of your USB ports and IRQ's - this should correct the problem.

But ideally, this should be done on a fresh format before you install anything else ... chipset first, everything else later.  I've had a lot of problems not installing that first.  In addition, when installing, it is also better to install using the built in setup files instead of through Windows and the INF files (add hardware wizard).  The wizard misses some steps in the process that causes the hardware to malfunction later on.

I hate to admit it but I actually had a friend install the drivers, but I was sat right beside him when he was doing it and he did install the chipset first.

I will try reinstalling the chipset drivers again and report back.
