Re: Can Thinkpad T61 be upgraded to 8GB RAM ?

Please let me know if it works out. On my computer the kernel is not hacked. Should that make a difference about the upgrade to 8GB working yes or no??

If you have an end user version of windows 32bit, you can install upto 8gb, but windows will only be able to use 3gb. If you have a 64bit windows, you are good to go with over 200gb of ram. In cases where you must use 32bit windowns and want more than 3gb ram, you can use windows server edition, or there are kernal hacks that will do the same thing, but many will break your activation. If you want to upgrade to 64bit, you can use your 32bit key to activate 64bit disc.

No problems also with 32bit Windows 7. PAE hack didn't break the activation and didn't cause any other problems. I just wish that I could also use the 64bit OS in that laptop, but no can do.

Just upgraded my T61 RAM to 8GB (PC2-5300). No problems at all with 32bit Windows 7 that has PAE hack. It didn't break the activation and all the 8GB is usable. It just works :)

I do not know about 32 OS, but my T61p happily runs Ubuntu 64bit with 8Gb RAM. This T61p is actually my favourite machine for normal web browsing and related tasks. I even like to run company VPN on this machine and handle normal office-related issues. Not optimal, but the ergonomics are great.

I have been considering the P70 as a replacement, but the de-centralized keyboard is a real deal-breaker. Total **bleep** when you consider ergonomics. I am using a high-end workstation with the previous generation Lenovo Thinkpad keyboard at work.

The de-centralized keyboard in new Thinkpads is really, really stupid idea.
