DVD R/W Drive Will Not Recognize DVD's

2008-08-26, 3:27 AM

Good Evening All,

I have a T43 2687-DUU with Windows XP Service Pack 3 installed.  The Device Manager lists the DVD drive as MAT**bleep**A DVD-RAM UJ-822S.  I just noticed my DVD drive will not recognize DVD's.  It will recognize and play normal data or music CD's.  But when I load a DVD into the drive it spins for a few seconds then stops but it does not recognize the media in the drive.  When I use Windows Explorer and navigate to the drive it does not show there is anything in the drive.

I tried using data DVD's and movie DVD's and none of them work.  I also tired putting the same media in another PC and they work fine in the other PC.  I listed some of the things I have tired below.

  •  I have tried downloading a firmware update from the downloads and drivers site.  I downloaded a ISO file and burned bootable CD.  When I ran the program it said my driver did not need to be updated.
  • I have to update the divers using and article I found on the self help page.  Involved a corrupted driver file from Media Player II installation.  I do not think this is the issue because I do not have that version installed yet.

I really need the DVD to work because I software that is on DVD and I cannot load it until I find a way to resolve this issue.  Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,

T

The CD/DVD drive uses different LED lasers to read CDs or DVDs. It's not uncommon for one of the two lasers to fail while the other remains operational.

If you know anyone with another T4X series machine you could borrow a working optical drive to check if this might be your problem.

James

James,

You were so correct.  I got on the phone with Lenovo Tech support and they sent out a replacement.  I was still under warranty so, everything worked out great.

Re: DVD R/W Drive Will Not Recognize DVD's

I have exactly the same problem as T43owner.

However, I do not know of anyone that owns the same machine with the same MAT**bleep**A DVD-RAM UJ-822S installed in it.

I also doubt that my HW is still under Warranty.

Although I will say that the only problems I have ever had with my Lenovo T43 has been with this same DVD Drvie as noted by my only other Posts in this forum.

The only other comments I can add to what T43owner did was to check my System Event Viewer which would show the following Event Error:

Source: cdrom

Category: None

Event ID: 11

Description: The driver detected a controller error on \Device\CdRom0.

I did click on the Support Link which initially said that the Event ID could be caused by a faulty cable connecting the drive to the laptop.   I tried several of the suggestions but still have the problem.

Any help will be appreciated. :)

Doubt this will help, but did you try reseating the drive in the ultrabay?

Thx for the reply Keith,

I'm not sure exactly what you mean by reseating.

I have removed the drive several times in attempts to clean the lens and mirror and general all around cleaning but

nothing seems to help.

ciao, Dan
