Hard Drive / SMART Extended Self Test

2010-07-26, 18:14 PM

My computer froze a couple of times on Saturday.  I loaded in Safe Mode and ran virus protection.  At that time it found 70 cookies and fixed.  Just to be safe I ran chkdsk at startup and in Stage 5 of 5 my computer would freeze at 57% finished.  This happened multiple times.

Therefore, I ran Lenovo Quick Hard Drive Test.  It ran the first test and in step six, "SMART", it suggested running extended self test.  Therefore I ran again with.

The harddrive passed the first five test.  During the "SMART Extended Self Test" it seemed to hang-up at 11%.  Just as I was about to exit the program it continued.  Now it is stuck at 99% and has been for 1 hour.

What should I do? Please Help!

My HD is a Seagate ST9160823AS....

I ended up Xing out and running the "Diagnose Hardward" from Rescue and Recovery.  All hardware checked out...I guess I will try running the test again after Defrag and another virus scan...

Would love suggestions...

It's time to backup your files, yesterday at best, and replace that hard drive. If you insist on testing the drive again I recommend you do this after backing up your files.

If you still have warranty you need to call support and they should be able to overnight you a new drive.

I am currently backing up.  But as I am running Vista, I hate to invest in a new hard-drive until I am certain that that is the problem.

Once you've finished your backup, download SeaTools for DOS and create a bootable cd and run it.

Okay...I ran the SeaTools for DOS Short and Long and the test "Passed".  I also ran another virus scan and it came back clean.  I then tried chkdsk again and the machine froze.  The computer seems to be operating as good as it ever has at the moment...

...is there anything else I can try?

Hello,

It can take a while—e.g., the better part of a day in some extreme cases—for Chkdsk to completely scan a disk volume, based on the number of files on the disk, the amount of space they take up and the amount of fragmentation.  You might want to try letting the operation run overnight when you are doing using the computer for the day and see what the results are in the morning.

Okay...I will try to run again tonight and let it run all night long.  For the record, that is what I tried when I originally made my post.  However, it won't hurt to try again.

Also, for the record, when I run the chkdsk I am not running it from the command prompt.  I am going into properties of the drive...When I run it with both checkboxes checked ( Automatically fix file system errors AND Scan for and attempt recovery of bad sectors), it freezes.  However, when I run it with "Automatically fix file system errors" only checked it completes without a problem.  I don't know if this is significant or not but I thought I'd share just in case...

Hello,

Could you try setting up the Chkdsk to run from the Command Prompt the next time the computer is rebooted, and then reboot it when you are ready to begin?  That way the disk check will occur before the operating system fully loads, as well any software packages which may be interfering (not that I'm aware of any; I would just like to rule that out).
