IBM T43 (USB - Windows 7)

2009-12-18, 5:50 AM

Hey all,

new to the forum

I have an IBM T43 1871 and i installed Windows 7 Ultimate on it yesterday.

Didnt have too many issues other than the wireless card requiring the WinXP drivers in order to work...

I am having an issue with my USB neither of my ports are working.

Within my Device Manager this is what i get

Intel(r) 82801FB/FBM USB Universal Host Controller - 2658

Intel(r) 82801FB/FBM USB Universal Host Controller - 2659

Intel(r) 82801FB/FBM USB Universal Host Controller - 265A

Intel(r) 82801FB/FBM USB Universal Host Controller - 265B

Intel(r) 82801FB/FBM USB2 Universal Host Controller - 265C

I am currently have errors on

Intel(r) 82801FB/FBM USB Universal Host Controller - 2658

and

Intel(r) 82801FB/FBM USB2 Universal Host Controller - 265C

The Error reads within the General tab of the properties of the device as:

Windows has stopped this device because it has reported problems. (code 43)

I very rarely used my USB before i installed Windows 7 so i cannot varify that i was having this issue before using Vista.

I'm trying to figure out if this is a common driver problem, or a common hardware flaw in these laptops

If anyone can assist me with this, i'd be greatly appreciative.

If worse comes to worse i can get  PCMCIA card with a USB dongle on it as this laptop will becoming primarly a desk computer.

Thanks

Richard

Have you installed ThinkVantage System Update (for Windows 7) and run a driver update from Lenovo yet?  If not, do so.  I have a T43 2668 and had no WiFi until I connected it via ethernet, downloaded the System Update client, and ran the update.  It downloaded all the proper updates, rebooted, and everything was fine including WiFi.  It did have an unknown device, but that was my fingerprint reader and after installing ThinkVantage Client Security Solution for Win7, the biometric device was found and my T43 has worked great since.  Better than it ever did with XP or (gasp, cough, snort) Vista.

It's a known hardware issue, the Southbridge chip on the motherboard is failing, and the first thing usually to go haywire are USB ports.

Get a PCMCIA card and start saving money for a replacement motherboard, or a new laptop altogether.

Good luck.

George

"Southbridge chip on the motherboard is failing"

That ... was my next post if the USBs still failed after running updates.  But I didn't want to jinx anything before the system update.

Buy a cheap PCMCIA card for USB port usage and use your laptop for as long as it remains stable.

Personally, I'd forget about trying to track down a new motherboard though.  Yeah - you can do it.  But the cost of a new Windows 7 equipped laptop (not necessarily a Lenovo) with the latest hardware (even on basic models)  just doesn't make it cost effective to sink more money into the aging T43 beyond a PCMCIA usb card.

(As much as I love my T43 and T23 laptops, when it comes to computers, I don't get overly nostalgic.  I consider them about the same way I consider a toaster or microwave oven.  Appliances that, at some point, will need to get replaced.)         :^)

I won't be upgrading the motherboard based on the prices that i have found on ebay, they are very expensive...

i missed out on a working t43p that had a broken LDC, someone was selling it in the Dallas Area on Craigslist for 60 bucks, i figured that would have been a decent amount of money to get parts from it, especially if i could get the better verison of the motherboard.

thanks guys, getting a PCMCIA card today from frys electronics,

Try posting a WTB (want to buy) ad on TPF:
