Intel Ultimate-N 6300 in a 14.1" T61p

2010-11-01, 17:51 PM

For anyone that has replaced their wireless card with the latest (half-height) Ultimate-N 6300 wireless card.  I want virtual wireless networking, which my current 4965AGN does not support, and any additional range that 6300 might provide.

My concerns are:

  • Is there a way to hold the half-height adapter in place besides tape, e.g. is there an adapter on the market?
  • My three mini RF coax wires may not reach far enough to contact the pins on the 6300.
  • Is the T61p motherboard compatible with this card, i.e. will it give me a Code 10 error?  (Note, I will be running Win 7 x64)

Please reply only if you have some experience with this.

Thanks.

I'm willing to bet it can be done as long as there's a way of securing the card down.

The machine may spit out and error code, but I believe you can get help with that via bios mod from another site.

I've read somewhere on TPF that there's an adapter which does exactly what you're looking for, but can't find the thread to save a life right now.

That being said,  you will need a modded BIOS with the card in question.

Good luck.

Cheers,

George

Hello,

If possible, you will probably want to purchase an Intel Centrino Ultimate-N 6300 half-height mini PCIe ID card with an IBM/Lenovo FRU in order to maximize your chances of compatibility with the BIOS of your ThinkPad T61p.  That said, you are still going to have to do some experimentation to see whether or not it does work.

I have used double-sided foam core tape to attach a half-height miniPCIe card to a system that had a full-height miniPCIe socket and it worked fine.  It was a mini-ITX motherboard and not a notebook, but I do not see why it would be any different than a notebook computer.
