The ultimate solution is to retrofit a T61 motherboard into the T60, this increases the max ram from 3gb to 8gb, better cpu chips, sata1 to sata2, and many other advantages, plus the T60 had better screen options.

If you are interested in doing this mod I can send you some more information. I

ps. these t60/61 hybrids are considered among the best thinkpads ever made by many, or more correctly I should say "never made" since it's a combination never offered by lenovo.

Welcome to the forum.

> 1GB RAM

If you don't want to replace the motherboard, then a simple upgrade would be to increase RAM to 3GB or 4GB. Note that you will need previous-generation DDR2 modules. You can buy used modules at reasonable prices on sites like eBay.

Another upgrade would be to replace the hard disk with a solid state disk. You can buy 120GB SSDs these days inexpensively.

While neither of these upgrades will increase CPU speeds like a T61 motherboard upgrade (since the CPU isn't changed), they will increase the overall system speed by reducing the number of disk accesses (more RAM) and speeding up those that have to be made (SSD.)

My comments are mine. I don't work for or speak for Lenovo.

The T60 series won't be able to use 4gb of ram even if a 64bit cpu and OS is installed. The Bios will report upto 4gb installed, but the chipset is limited to only 3gb. This is also true for the R60, X60, and Z61 series
