Lenovo ThinkPad T61 14,1" LCD problem

2013-10-14, 7:49 AM

Hi, LCD in my T61 14,1" with nVidia graphics (T61 7664-18G) has failed - I attached an image. External LCD is 100% OK, just internal have this problem (like image in fog, bad readable). I try to replace LCD - problem is still there. What can be the solution? LCD cable, invertor, or it is a nVidia problem (but really just internal LCD problem)? Thanks for help.

Internal LCD (like in fog, no readable text - or very bad):

External LCD (vertical lines just in photo, everything is 100% OK):

I think too, but what now? Buy new/used mainboard with nVidia is risk with same error ... Buy new/used mainboard with integrated Intel graphics (external display in dock width 1920x1200 will not be problem, second display with same resolution will be ok with intel graphic too I think, or?)? Buy another T61/T400 with Intel graphics (because of compatibility and old style keyboard) It is used only for programming, I think that I don't need graphics performance ... Are parts from T61 with nVidia graphics full compatible with parts with Intel graphics (when I will go this way I will have some replacement parts :) )? Or is it compatible T61 14,1" and T400 in main parts? What will be the best choice? Performance of T61 is sufficient for development of web applications etc.

If you don't need graphic performance and the T61 performance is enough for you I would buy an Intel T61 planar and replace the Nvidia one. RAM and CPU are compatible, but you will need an integrated heatsink since it's different than the discrete one you have now. I can't comment about driving two monitors, I guess you now use both VGA and DVI ports, right?

You can also re-use your hard drive or SSD and WLAN card.

If you go the T400 way (or even T410, it also has a non chiclet keyboard) you will be able to reuse the hard drive/ssd. RAM is not compatible! (DDR3 instead of DDR2)

Hope this helps!

Cheers

Yes, I am using both (DVI and VGA) now (when I am using 2 external monitors). I will probably buy old T61 with Intel graphics and have some more replacement parts (LCD, keyboard, etc) - but they are not common with resolution 1440x900 in internal LCD, isn't it? I love this resolution on my T61 internal/notebook LCD. Is it changable internal LCD from 1280x800 with 1440x900? And is it changeable keyboard from T61 14,1" with T400?

Yes you can swap the LCDs, but if you get a cheap T61 with WXGA you better swap the complete lid.

T400 and T61 keyboards are compatible, (also R400, R500, T500, W500) :-)

Cheers...

If you swap with an Intel system board you can use the nVidia fan, just remove the grey silicone pad from the platformt hat colls the boards chipset controller and replace it with thermal paste. The nVidia fan has three cooling platforms and the Intel fan has two, the nVidia fan can be used on both boards and works equally well.

Regarding external displays, the intel will have no problem supporting your external monitor. The Intel X3100 gpu actually preforms pretty well and on average use is comparable to the nVidia graphics. For apps written to use the nVidia graphic processor you will get better performance with the nVidia.

Also keep in mind that there are two different generations of T61 boards, the older ones support Merom class CPU chips and the newer ones support Merom and Penryn chips. If you have a penryn cpu (T8100, 8300, 9300, 9500) you'll need a penryn board.

Re: Lenovo ThinkPad T61 14,1" LCD problem

Hey!

Since a couple of weeks my Thinkpad T61 has the same problem. In the internal display, every second column is replaced with blue pixels, which basically halves the horizontal screen resolution and makes it quite hard to read anything (the same as in your picture, thank you for posting it @xsuchy09).

When it started, the effect was flickering on and off, as if there was some defective contact. And I think one time for a fraction of a second the vertical stripes just occurred in a video embedded in a web page, but not the web page itself. This indicates that it's a GPU problem rather than a display problem, maybe the Nvidia bug.

However, why is the external display still working fine? I would have expected the same blue stripes.

@Tasurinchi, is this a typical symptom of the Nvidia bug or do you think there some hope that this can be fixed by checking/replacing the internal LCD connector cable?

Cheers, f0k

The external moditor connector is an analog signal and the internal is digital, it's produced by different areas of the graphic processor and it's quite common for a failed gpu to only affect the internal display...  at least at first, but when it fails completely there is often no boot and many failed chips report 3 beeps.
