Memory upgrade for T-61 questions.....

2013-01-22, 15:30 PM

I have a T-61 that I purchased in 2007. Its still running ok. I just installed Win 7 and its a big difference. I have 3 MB RAM, and would like to upgrade.  I suppose I will remove the 1 MB chip and replace with a 2 BM....It handles only 4 MB RAM.....right? Does it handle 8MB  for Windows 7?

No.

T61/p will happily handle 8GB of RAM. Typing on one right now. The same holds true for R61/e/i and X61/s/T.

The reason why the documentation states 4GB as the limit for these machines is that at the time of their announcement the largest DIMM on the market was 2GB...

Cheers,

George

Hey there Trailblazer,

What I am able to tell from the PSRef as well as Intel's site on the motherboard and processor, 4GB of RAM does look like the cap (at the time the machine was released.) I will say that Crucial has an excellent tool on their site to determine what you can get, and is very helpful in my opinion. Good Luck!

EDIT: Of course, I think some of our T61 users may have some valuable insight for you as well. Thanks for clarification guys.

As already stated, yes the 61-series systems can support 8GB RAM. However since you didn't indicate it, you need to run the 64-bit version of Windows in order to use all that extra RAM.

Also note that you will need DDR2 RAM, not the DDR3 that's now the standard. Expect less choice and higher prices for DDR2 nowadays.

Thanks for responding. I installed Windows 7, 64 bit.  How do you get 8 GB into them. Can use use DDR3 memory   instead of DDR2?  I am leaning to go with the 4GB since its really only going to be used to login to my work PC.

To get to 8GB you need two 4GB modules. You can't use DDR3 because it's a different technology. In any case the modules are physically different.

Well, I replaced the 1 GB stick with a 2 GB. It was very simple, and with Windows 7 installed, this6 year old

laptop runs really nice. Its quite fast. Most people get 2-3 years out of a laptop, makes a difference when you buy quality.

Hey there Mark,

I'm not sure what everyone is using necessarily, but I can tell you that the PSRef references DDR2 PC2-5300/DDR2-667, 200pin SODIMM modules as being compatible, it would be your best bet to stick with these.

DDR2 PC2-5300 (667mhZ bus speed) 200pin SODIMM or

DDR2 PC2-6400 (800mhZ bus speed) 200pin SODIMM will work on a T61. True that T61 originally came with PC2-5300  but PC2-6400 will work just fine. It will simply clock down to PC2-5300 speed. There will be no difference in performance between one or the other (on a T61). One benefit of PC2-6400 is that it is usually less expensive. And, if your machine conks out, you can re-use the RAM in a laptop which may be able to utilize the (slightly faster) PC2-6400 speed :)
