Mystery PCIe slot on T61 models.

2011-11-22, 10:21 AM

All the documentation for the T61 and T61p models list it as having two PCIe slots, yet there appears to be a third "half height" slot that is never occupied on any of the systems I've worked on.

Here is a photo....

Next to this mystery slot, there is the PCIe slot 1 containing a wifi card, then on the far left is the PCIe slot 2, that often is used for Intel turbo memory, but this slot is never occupied. My best guess is it was a feature that was never fully added to the model, but I've been tempted to try it and see if it actually works, but perhaps someone knows and can tell me what exactly this is, and if it is any use.

Update: I was told on another forum that this slot is used for an optional sim card reader. I'm still kinda curious if it can be used for anything else, as it looks like a half-height miniPCIe card will fit.

isn't that for the Wireless USB adapter I had that in mine not real sure but I think that might only come on the 15.4 " models the sim card plugs in that white plug above the wifi card in your pic also the sim reader goes in that rectangle slot above the battery contacts

If you mean the mPCIe slot below the fan on your picture, this is the slot for the optional wireless WAN card.

I believe your correct. I just checked on thinkwiki and it does list 3 miniPCIe slots for the T61p, but not the T61, although this slot exists on both models.

It also list it as shipping either unused, or with wireless usb.

I think I'm going to get a half height card so I can test it, make sure it's fully functional on both T61 and T61p

No, I'm not talking about the #2 miniPCIe slot, this is the #3 slot, I highlighted it within the bright rectangle on that photo so you would know which I was referring to.

yes thats where the Wireless USB adapter card goes, the one by the CPU is where the wireless WAN card would be

I was just looking at a half height mini pcie 2gb turbo memory card. If that works in this slot, then I can remove the full height turbo mem card from slot 2, and will have it available for future use, but the real reason I want to do is is because I just want to know if this slot will work, or if it's used only for a propriatary device. The only problem is unless I want to pay twice as much, I have to wait 3-4 weeks for shipment from hongkong to get the card.

Hi everyone.

just a few remarks on this topic:

- on my T61p, I had the Intel Turbo Memory installed in the far-left slot, below the CPU. It's currently out of the system as I'm booting off an SSD these days. that would be a full size slot.

- the next slot to the right, near the CPU, has the modem card. that is a half size.

- the next slot to the right holds the wifi card indeed and the next one, on the far right was / is empty - and it's a half size.

I would be very interested in installing a GPS chip here, there are a few interesting implementations of GPS reveivers in mPCI-E format ...

in a t61p to the right of the modem, is the wlan mini pci e and to the right of that is a half height mini pci e slot. I have no idea what can be put in that.
