NVS140M Failures?

2008-10-24, 13:24 PM

I have a T61 with the 140M graphics card, with warranty expiring in March of 2009. When/if it fails after that, will service be provided? The G86 cores, which are featured in the 140M, and the G84 cores, in the 570M, have an issue with thermal cycling that you can find on Google fairly easily. Will I need to purchase extended warranty, or will after warranty care be provided on the grounds that the chip uses defective material?

Thanks

Obiwanshinobi,

Officially Lenovo has not announced any special service program for nvidia GPUs.

If you would like to ensure your system is covered against hardware defects for a period longer than the base warranty, I would suggest you consider one of the extended warranty options.

I'm just not sure how to answer your question otherwise.  I do understand there has been a lot of discussion and numerous articles written about the chips.

Best regards,

Mark

Hmmm... This isn't exactly what us T61 owners were hoping to hear.

Everybody knows the chips are defective as manufactured.

Ugh..I always thought that nVidia would be paying for the repairs, as it was their issue in the first place.

Do the T61 series use a removable GPU assembly? Or is the GPU, like many other notebooks, soldered onto the mainboard?

If so, if the GPU dies, will it be possible to replace the mainboard with a different GPU (dedicated non G86/84M chip)

T61's GPU is soldered to the motherboard, as is on 95% or more ThinkPads with discrete graphics.

If Lenovo were to replace your board, you'd get the same type of board and the same type of GPU. No customizations are allowed in the repair procedure.

Hope this helps.

So basically..if I were to buy an extended warranty and the GPU fails 2 years after that, I'd get another faulty GPU which would fail 2 years after that? Lenovo doesnt allow you to downgrade? Well, in that situation, I'm not sure what I'd do.

The way I'm looking at it is that Lenovo will likely have a fix for this issue two years from now, or probably less. That's why it pays to extend one's warranty IMO.

Once IBM had the ATi issue resolved on T4x/R5x series, replacement board were prepared in the best manner available so they wouldn't fail again. I see no reason for Lenovo not to follow that path, especially that it's less likely to deal with an epidemic than it had been the case with ATi failures.

My $0.02 only...

Cheers,

George

Well for what it's worth, the T61 GPU issues arent actually a fault of Lenovo, they're a fault of nVidia using subquality silicon, in my understanding of the issue. The 8XXX series line has already been discontinued and replaced by the 9XXX line when this quality issue was found, so it is unlikely that any changes to the manufacturing process/silicon will be made, and so it'd be expected that any replacement G84/86 GPUs would also have this issue.

Well this is kind of a disappointment, my 1000 dollar laptop is now going to waste because nVidia decided to skimp on 10 dollars on the manufacturing.
