Need Serial Number

2008-05-10, 4:17 AM
My laptop was just stolen, and while I can get the serial number from my workplace based on the original order info on Monday, I'd like to give it to the police right away (today is Saturday).  I'm registered with Lenovo, thus my Serial Number should be connected to my name.  How do I find this online?  In Australia, there is no phone service on weekends.

Thanks.

I have not tried, but this should be located in your profile.  When you login, check your past orders and it should be there ... good luck with that.

Thanks for the advice, unfortunately I purchased the laptop through my work, which is why I can't get the order info till Monday.  But it is registered under my name, you'd think I could just look myself up.

Also, does anyone know whether thieves can bypass passwords somehow in XP?  Or do the typically just wipe the harddrive and sell it?

Typically, there are many tools to bypass Windows XP passwords - but the implementation varies from company to company.  In some cases, if the company appropriately set the logon settings for the system, it may be impossible to even sell the system with a wiped drive or not.  However, if the system was simply used out of the box, then there is a high likelihood that the machine will not have any safeties in place to prevent data loss and can be simply wiped and sold.

To make things difficult for thieves, there is a lojack-similar system to GPS track laptops, but I do not recall how the pricing goes for that.  But for my own personal use, I have 2 passwords: 1 to encrypt the hard drive, which supports full hardware encryption and 2, to lock the BIOS such that there is no way they can access the BIOS to reset anything unless they knew how to disassemble the machine to pull the CMOS battery.  But because of the construction of the Thinkpad's, I doubt anyone would be willing to go that far to get the CMOS battery.

As for looking up orders, generally the sales database is indexed by order number only - names would not be searchable unless you could call up the sales center, which for you, is currently closed.  For now, you will simply need to alert your company of the loss and report it with a police report.  When you get the serial number, you can update it later.

The serial number is also on the shipping box if you still have it.
