Notebook T420 suddenly shutdowns - HW problem?

2020-11-22, 8:40 AM

my notebook T420 suddenly shutdowns under the both Windows and Linux.

I need to

  • take out the battery
  • pull up the powercord out of notebook and press poweron button - the notebook starts up and after 2-3 seconds shutdowns again (if I pull up the powercord out of power socket and press poweron button - the notebook doesnt start)
  • after several retries the notebook starts and is on for several hour (even on battery). Then the cycle starts again.

Do you have the idea what is the problem?

Sounds like a heat problem.  I would install something like TPFanControl (freeware) and monitor temperatures.  You might open the machine and get the dust out or even reseat the fan with fresh thermal paste.
