OEM Installation CD available?

2011-12-05, 17:43 PM

I have the little Windows XP Product Key sticker. Do I not have the right to have windows based on that key?

I had to put my own hard drive in a T42 2378 and was wondering if I can get something like an OEM WinXP installation disk with which I can use my key. I tried to use the key with a retail XP and it said it was an invalid key...

That's right. The licese key from the sticker only works with an OEM-/Systembuilder - version of xp.

In the opposite to Windows 7 there were more restrictions with the XP-license key. Annother restiction is, that XP service pack 3 CD retail cannot be installed with the license key of XP service pack <none>, 1 or 2 (retail), because starting with XP service pack 3 annother number range was used.

Betreff: OEM Installation CD available?

Are those OEM/Systembuilder versions available? I actually read the EULA and it said that the key goes with the CPU and the ownership may be transferred if the computer is sold. So I'm thinking I could get that OEM disk for FREE somewhere and, because I have the sticker, I would have a legal copy of Windows. Am I wrong?

You are correct, you own the windows. Of course microsoft is like a bulley and wants you to pay again and again, but if you own the computer and sell it with the COA, then you're transferring ownership to the new owner. You can sell the computer and retain ownership too.

What you need is a copy of an OEM disc. Most people don't sell them because  it makes them a target of microsoft, who expects you to do the job of law enforcement to make sure the person has the right to own it, but if I'm selling the disc, I'm not going to do their job for them, microsoft has these discs available for download to their oem customers and could easily allow the end user to download them if they have a valid key, but they won't. If you call them, they will tell you to call the manufacturer, who in turn want to sell you recovery software, not just the disc you need. It's a vicious circle, but I'll PM you some info that will help you to get your system working.

Hello,

You should be able to order a recovery CD (or DVD) set from IBM support for your ThinkPad T42.  This will contain not just a version of Microsoft Windows XP tailored to work with your ThinkPad, but all of the device drivers and any supplemental software that cannot be downloaded elsewhere (DVD playing software comes to mind).

The T42 is too old - i don't think, that recovery CDs still are available at Lenovo. It might be better to buy the Recovery-CDs at ebay for example.

Recovery CDs for T40(p), T41(p), R51 will work on T42 since the T4* - generation completely is out of warranty. If a R51 Type 18xx they should work without any changes. If recovery-CDs for R51 Type 2xxxwill be used the ATI-video driver needs to be installed after recovery.

Yes, you're correct. It's the rights he owns, not the product, but it's hard to exercise those rights if microsoft only sells the disc if you purchase the same rights over again.

When we purchase a thinkpad, we're purchasing rights to use all the software that ships with the product, and all that software can be downloaded on the web, all except the operating system...    why is that?  You'd think microsoft, the richest company in the world would be eager to help the people who got them there, instead of trying to sell duplicate/redundant licenses to use the product.

Re: OEM Installation CD available?

Hello,

I have the same problem as the OP, I have had to install a new drive on a Lenove X61s and I am having problems getting some OEM Windows XPsoftware  (I have the windows product number sticker) that was originally on the computer. The computer is old but still robust and I would like to keep using it.

Would you have any Windows XP OEM software that I could use that would allow me to legally reinstall the OS using the product key on the sticker.

Thanks very much for you help
