PS/2 keyboard not woking on a T61

2010-04-23, 8:43 AM

Greetings,

I've run int a bit of trouble with this keyboard of mine, it's a "Logitech Internet 350 Keyboard" with a PS/2 connector.

Since the T61 does not have a PS/2 port (without a dock) i'm using a PS/2 to USB converter.

When in windows, the keyboard shows up as an unrecognized device, nor will it work in the BIOS menu.

I tried update the BIOS to the latest version via Thinkpad flash update utility, but still no dice.

I've heard that PS/2 is now considered a legacy port and some laptops have an option in the BIOS to enable support for them, but none seems to be present in mine.

Also, the keyboard itself is in fine working condition and has no troubles operating when connected to a desktop PC with either PS/2 directly or the PS/2 to USB connector.

Any info on how to tackle this issue is appreciated. Even if it's saying that i'm trying to do the impossible :)

Hello,

My understanding is that some of the newer keyboards manufacturered with PS/2 connectors also contain additional electronics on their logic board, which allows them to detect when a physical PS/2 to USB adapter has been plugged in and to enumerate as a USB HID-class device. Older PS/2 keyboard without the electronics to intelligently switch between the two require an additional electrical bridge to convert the signals, which is what one of the more expensive adapters provides when plugged in between the keyboard and the computer.

Hello,

Are you using just a slim "inline" purple PS/2 keyboard to USB converter, or a PS/2 to USB adapter with some electronics in it, such as this one offered by Lenovo or this one from a keyboard vendor to connect the Logitech Internet 350 Keyboard to your ThinkPad T61?  If the former, then perhaps an intelligent adapter might work better.

Thanks for the swift reply. :)

the adapter in question is an ELFA 25-364-07 so i'd assume it does indeed fall intto the inline category.

I'll try and see if i can get my hands on a more "inteligent" one next week.

Though I'm still slightly baffeld by the fact that such a simple pehipiral can cause so much hastle. :)

And i'll also consider just simply looking for a new keyboard, one with a USB plug this time :)

It was the question itself that led me to post here :D
