Problem with T61p graphic card powering 24" display

2008-05-09, 2:17 AM

I have a T61p loaded with RAM and a nVidia Quadro FX 570m graphic card and it seems to have trouble powering my external display. I have a 24" Dell 2407WFP. I connect from the laptop's VGA connecter to the VGA port on the monitor. The resolution is fine but I get a rather consistent flicker effect across the screen. It is most noticable on large gradients like my desktop. I also have a kind of ghosting of text on a page. Any contrasty items leave a trail to the right of the object. This comes and goes but is very very annoying. I'd take a screen shot but it is impossible --any ideas?

what resolution and refresh rate are you using, to power such a high resolution LCD display, it would be better if you use DVI-D ports using the advanced mini dock.

My display has a native resolution of 1920x1200 and it seems like the default refresh rate is 59 Hertz. The only other option is 60 Hertz. As for the Advanced Mini Dock if I knew it would fix the problem I'd do that for sure.

have you got the latest drivers set from Lenovo??? i guess part of your flicker problem is down to the vga connection, since you are driving a very high resolution..... do you have another monitor you can test on for your laptop???? i get your problem too, using the vga port when i plug to the office's 24 inch Dell monitors....... i use DVI-D on my Advanced mini-dock and the problem seem to be gone...............

but i guess you need one of the mod to confirm for you...

I had a similar problem on a 22" screen (it was enough to make one sea-sick!):- googled and discovered that someone else fixed their problem with the same screen by replacing the cheap and nasty VGA cable. Following their advice, I replaced my cable with a better quality one from an old screen and that fixed the problem fine! You might give it a try?!

More dell monitors have that. You should check out some forums, maybe you can return it. Also see video. Probally nothing to do with the laptop or connection.

Thanks for all the info so far...

A couple of things to note: the Dell monitor is about 2 years old now but other than current circumstances has been very reliable. I'll have to switch displays somehow to see if the problem persists... it's just that I never had this problem before and my desktop unit works fine. I had a T60p that I had to return to Lenovo (wireless + Bluescreen = death) that worked fine. I guess that is why I think it is the nVidia 570m card inside the T61p. The T60p ATI card worked perfectly. Both laptop machines used Vista Ultimate. I'll pick up a better VGA cable. btw, what constitutes a better cable? Belkin? Thanks!

a better cable is one that use low oxygen content copper wiring, some can be up to couple of hundred dollars each.... but as i said you should try it out on another LCD monitor, it may not be the problem of the cable, if it's relatively new....... Maybe phone Lenovo support and ask them about the problem

For my 2405FP, VGA is junk.  My issue is the VGA cable itself - even after using some higher grade branded gold plated stuff, the picture was only marginally better.  VGA just isn't meant to handle such a resolution.  DVI on the advanced mini dock will make the biggest difference, for sure.
